NEWSLETTER OF SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL, TAYLOR MILL, KENTUCKY

Where great students do amazing things
______________________________________________________________________________
June 8, 2015

Message from the Principal  6-8-15

Congratulations, Scott High School Class of 2015! What a great year at Scott High.  Thank you parents, students, teachers, and staff for all of your hard work and commitment. As we say good bye to our seniors, we are already working hard to prepare for the start of another school year this fall. School starts Aug. 19th, and we have high expectations for another great year.

Dual Credit Classes for 2015-2016

We currently have almost 100 students scheduled to take a dual credit college class as a dual enrolled student in 2015-2016 school year.  In addition to a variety of AP classes, we offer several dual credit options on campus at Scott each year.  Dual credit and AP courses will receive weight in the KEES GPA calculation.

If you are interested in signing up for dual credit classes for the 2015-2016 school year, it is not too late.  Any class you take at a college will be counted as a dual credit class at Scott.  Please contact Mr. Rogers or your counselor if you have questions.

Schedules for 2015-2016 School Year

We are currently working hard on completing student schedules for the 2015-2016 school year.  Preliminary schedules were provided to students the last day of school for 2015-2016 Scott High School students. The master schedule has been developed, but it is likely that a few adjustments will need to be made in response to student needs. We will continue to work on schedules throughout the summer to assure the best overall schedule for all of our students at Scott High School:

If you currently have an incomplete schedule it may be for several different reasons:

  • Some of the classes you signed up for did not have enough students to make the 2015-2016 schedule
  • Some of the classes you signed up for may be in conflict (be scheduled for the same period)
  • You may not have chosen classes for which you are qualified
  • You may have not provided viable alternative classes

We continually work on schedules. Please be patient as counselors and administrators do get some summer vacation, but we will address your concerns as we can.

Your schedule could change for several different reasons, including but not limited to:

  • If you do not pass a class, this could cause your current schedule to be re-evaluated
  • If you need a specialized class (like an RTI class) we may need to alter your schedule in order to get all of your needed classes
  • If the school experiences some unforeseen change in staffing which causes certification issues, we may have to eliminate and/or change some class offerings.

While we are projected to have 879 students in the fall of 2015, if we end up with more or less students the result could be more schedule changes in order to have a school wide schedule which best benefits our entire student body.

Counselors will be in the office until June 9 and after Aug 5. We plan on making schedules visible on line through infinite campus on Aug 8.

In order to make a schedule change please utilize the schedule change request form located on our website at:

http://www.kenton.kyschools.us/2/Home

Become College and Career Ready (CCR)

Often you may hear a student, or an adult, ask the question "Are you CCR?", but what do they mean?  CCR is short for College and Career Ready. This term is actually referring to two different categories, College Ready and Career Ready.

* A student is considered College Ready when they demonstrate the minimum required level of performance on an approved assessment such as ACT, KYOTE, or Compass. Achieving College Ready status implies a student is ready for education at the next level, college, and will likely not be required to take remedial classes as a college student.

* In order for a student to be considered Career Ready they must first achieve a College Ready Status, complete an approved Career Pathway, and pass an approved industry level assessment such as KOSSA. Achieving Career Ready status may allow a student early acceptance into specific college programs as well as increase the chances of employment.

Get Involved

Are you wondering how you can get involved with activities as Scott High School? Would you be willing to volunteer time or provide input into issues and policies at Scott High School? We would love to get you more involved. Here are a few ways you could get involved:

* Principal Chat-Dr. Sapp has a question answer session each 2nd Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm. This "chat" takes place just before the SBDM meeting, so you could also stay for the council meeting as well.

* SBDM-Scott's School Based Decision Making Council meets each 2nd Tuesday at 6:00 pm. To view minutes, agendas, by-laws, and policies visit our website.

* Eagle Club-The Eagle Club is a parent group that meets each 4th Monday night at 6:00 pm. The Eagle club supports many extracurricular and curricular based programs at Scott.

* Parent Committees-there is a standing SBDM committee, which utilizes parents, in order to advise our SBDM council in the areas of Culture and Curriculum. If you are interested in participating, please contact Lisa Beckelhimer at lbeckelhimer@twc.com .

* Other Clubs-we have many clubs at Scott which are always looking for volunteers and additional community involvement. To see a list of clubs visit http://www.scott.kcactivities.org/

We look forward to hearing from you.

On June 4 at the Ryland Lakes Country Club on a strikingly beautiful day, the Scott High School Alumni Association held a luncheon to celebrate the retirement of staff members leaving Scott High School and Kenton County. The current retirees that were celebrated are Ken Mueller, Teri Brown, and Clay Dawson. Former retirees being honored included Marilyn Willenbrink, Cheryl Dietrich, Maureen Motsinger, Terri Mitsch, Dee Williams, Mary Kindel, Sue Dawkins, Susan Faris, Gayle Day, and Maggie Wilmhoff.   A special thanks to alumni board members Vickie Haddix, Spring Schneider, Terri Adams, Casey Fisk (also a current teacher) and Vickie Tate (a retired teacher), for their hard work in putting the luncheon together. SCOTT EAGLE CLUB INFORMATION FOR 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR

2015-2016 Eagle Club

SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL EAGLE CLUB

Who We Are:

The Eagle Club is a combination of a PTO and Athletic Booster Club.

What We Do:

The Eagle Club is designed to give financial help to the school and athletic teams. Some of the items that the Eagle Club helps to finance are all the academic awards that are given on Awards night in May, the Eagle Cash program, Scholarships (3 @ $1000), receptions such as the meal provided before parent-teacher night and elects the SBDM parent representatives each year. They help finance athletics by paying half of a teams' cost to purchase new uniforms every so many years, awards to district, regional, and state champions. The Eagle Club pays for the letters, bars, and pins for both athletics and academics. In addition, the club accepts special requests. A few years ago, the Eagle Club helped the band finance new chairs for the band room and recently, the drama club made a request for help with some items for the spring production. The majority of the money used to fund these requests is generated from the concession stands at our home games. Yearly the Club spends approximately $20,000 to support Scott High School activities. Beginning in 2012, Fieldhouse grillouts and after school concessions have funded many athletic teams and school organizations.

Every family is an automatic member of the Eagle Club. Currently, the Eagle Club is entertaining thoughts on a membership drive in order to raise more funds to use for the students of Scott High School.
