November 2014

Greetings!

This edition of the What's Up Downtown was delayed so we could cover the Haunted Hodag Howl, our only major fundraising event, and this year was a spectacular evening. Please go to our Facebook page to see the party goers in full costume. Our new Hodag owners are pictured below.  It looks like everyone is very happy, including the Hodags -- can you see their smiles?

Time is flying! We are only a few weeks away from what I hope will become part of your holiday tradition... "Downtown Rhinelander Holiday Open House  Extravaganza."

Some of the businesses have always held an open house on the weekend before Thanksgiving but this year we are giving you a reason to not only come downtown on Saturday, Nov. 22, but to stay. Besides the great shopping and eating opportunities, here is some of the things going on this special day:

*Carolers

*Wreaths/Ornaments/Hot Chocolate in Trig's Greenspace

*Wine Tasting

*Bow Making Workshops

*Soup Making Demonstrations

*Gift Wrapping *Free Hand Treatments

*Pom pom making

*Make & Take Greeting Cards

*Community Band Entertains

The Holiday Open House Extravaganza takes place Saturday from 9am to 5pm, with some of the businesses also holding their open houses on Friday night and Sunday.

I can't wait to start celebrating the holiday season and I look forward to seeing you downtown.

DRI Committee Reports
This is a brief report on the four committees that make up our organization. They are always looking for new members. Please contact us if you are interested in a topic of discussion. Generally, the committees meet during the day.

Economic Restructuring: Joe Flanders, Chair
  • The ER Committee is working on creating new packets for use in recruiting new businesses from neighboring communities.

Design: Pat LaPorte, Chair

  •  As the growing season comes to an end, the Design Committee is gathering at The Plaza to put the Greenspace to rest for the winter, trimming the plants before the snow starts to fly. Anyone who loves to garden is welcome to work on this beautiful space in our downtown. We work now, and again in spring when things start to come alive, and then in mid-summer to trim things up as the plants start to grow and flourish and weeds start to appear. Give the DRI office a call if this is something you can help with and be a part of the downtown community. We all need to work together to create a pleasant place to work and play.

Promotions: Position open

  • 2015 Events and budget are being worked on.
  • PotatoFest report by Dan Kuzlik: The Potato Fest planning committee (a subcommittee of Promotions) already has had several planning meetings for Potato Fest 2015. Expansion, grant opportunities and new additions are being discussed.

Organization: Sally Latimer, Chair

  • We're recruiting new members for the board and committees. If you are interested, please contact us at 715-362-7374.

Thanks to all who participated in the great Hodag Howl auction. As you can see below, Patty and I had to have a "baby" Hodag to add to our collection. Thanks also to all the dedicated volunteers and staff who created the spooky atmosphere for the night's festivities. It was a great night for howling!

Haunted Hodag Howl.
