June 2014

Returning snowbirds and summer visitors to Downtown Rhinelander will be pleasantly surprised to find three new businesses. The Brick restaurant, known for its casual cuisine, has relocated from Lake Tomahawk to the former Buggy's location at 16 N. Brown. A new furniture and curio store, The Shabby Cottage, is opening at 38 N. Brown. And Curls Gone Wild, at 138 S. Stevens, is a full-service beauty salon.

Join us in greeting our new neighbors!

The only thing constant is change. Downtown i

s changing. It is evolving. In the beginning, long before DRI, it was the hub of economic activity. It was the place to be the place to go. Then came the big box stores and the highway bypass (changes)!!! The passing of time has changed things more.

I am fortunate enough to travel, and as I visit different places and see different things, I notice that we are not alone in Rhinelander -- these changes are happening everywhere. None of this is good or bad. it just is...

The good t
hing is that the changes are occurring in all parts of the city, at different times and at different paces, and it is becoming Rhinelander's time. Downtown, the streets will soon be redone, and a faade improvement program is underway. We have businesses moving in, and yes, some are going out. Have I mentioned change?

The reality is that we in Rhinelander value our downtown, and are choosing to move it forward in a positive way. Although there are ups and downs, change is good, and we are changing for the better.

Your President,
Mark Gutteter

Shabby Cottage Opens in June

Christiane Micheketti has turned her passion into a business. According to Christiane, the new proprietor of the Shabby Cottage, "My husband told me that I either had to stop going to garage sales, donate, or get a shop.  I decided to open a shop. "

The Shabby Cottage, located at 38 N. Brown, will open Weds., June 4.  Shop hours will be Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to painted furniture, Christiane has curios, teapots, carnival glass and other glass wear.

Starting in September, Christiane also will be offering classes. Topics will include how to chalk paint, milk paint, crackle paint and a variety of other tips.

Welcome to Downtown, Christiane!

Take a trip down memory lane and celebrate the 100th year of the Model T.  In addition to Ford's famous creation, many other vintage cars will also be on display. Registration for cars is at 8 am. Trophies are awarded at 3 pm. There also will be a "Sound Off" competition.

This Month we report on two local businesses:

Driscoll Property Management is the I Buy Local Spotlight Business of the Week. Gary Driscoll says, "Being a locally-owned company, we support buying from other local businesses. It's great to visit our unique local establishments, where we get personal service from friendly people who remember our names and know what we like. When we spend our money at businesses owned and operated by our neighbors, we all benefit."

The Driscoll Property Management Team: Gregg Randolph, Jeff Mullin, Matt Mikelson, Don Barnhill, Deb Mullins, Mary Carley, and Gary Driscoll.
The Diel Insurance Team includes Jeff Roberts, Tracy Ridderbusch, Amy Johnson, Pan Briggs, Brian Diel, Vicki Bloch and Christine Diel.
Not pictured: Judy Korb.

Diel Insurance is also in the Spotlight. Brian Diel says, "Buying local is great for customers and our community. Spending local supports area employment which in turn helps to support local charitable organizations and our schools."

It's Hodag Season!

By early June, this year's group of the Downtown Rhinelander Inc. mini and large Hodags will be on display throughout Downtown Rhinelander.

These "beasts" are there for your viewing enjoyment. Find them all. Take pictures of them with yourself, your kids, your grandpa, Aunt Florie -- have some fun with these handsome, colorful, distinguished charmers that set Rhinelander apart from all other towns. If you have guests coming, make sure their to-do list includes finding each of the Hodags. Our DRI website and Facebook page will publish a list of the locations.

And don't forget to thank the following Hodag On Parade sponsors for this program. It would not exist without their generosity!
