Maggie at the I Buy Local Kick Off
|
by Maggie Steffen, DRI Executive Director
This is it, the month we all have been waiting for. August is always the warmest, the busiest, and possibly the most fun of the summer months. Well, at least that is case for Downtown Rhinelander. Throughout this newsletter you will find what we are up to, all of which will translate into fun things for you to do. I really hope you will be able to take part in at least a few of our upcoming activities, if not all. If you attend any event, it HAS to be PotatoFest. There is literally something for everyone. Information on the whole day is located on our website. This community event is what this part of the Northwoods has been waiting for. See you there!

Downtown gears up for the annual
ATV Pull & Pub Crawl
by Dick Timmons
The second annual ATV Pull will be held in downtown Rhinelander on Sat., Aug. 17, on Brown Street. Ed Orlikowski, General Manager of The Claridge Motor Inn is chair of the event.
In 2012 more than 450 people came downtown to enjoy this activity. That year it was held on Anderson Street. This year the contest will be right in the middle of Rhinelander's main downtown street, starting approximately at Bucket Heads. There will also be a pub crawl, and there will be seating provided on both sides of Brown Street.
This year's Pull starts at noon. There will be three judges. Orlikowski expects success building upon last year's event. It is expected to bring even more folks into Downtown Rhinelander.
The ATV Pull is sponsored by Central Wisconsin Pullers, Inc, Stratford, Wis. The contest is open to all, and there are still opportunities to participate.

DRI Committee News
Design
by Pat LaPorte, Chair
- This year's DRI Beer Tent theme is the Old West, so gather up your cowboots and hats and grab Miss Kitty and come on down and visit us during the Oneida County Fair, Aug. 2-4, at Pioneer Park.
- We still need bartenders for this event. We're a fun bunch and you'll get a kick out of serving beer to the thirsty crowd. So call the DRI office and see where you can fit in a few hours to help.
Economic Restructuring
by Dan Kuzlik, Chair
- The DRI board passed our ER committee budget for the coming year, including $10,000 to seed a new building façade grant program.
- The "I BUY LOCAL" campaign will be scheduling business interest and information sessions the week of July 22, to gauge support for a second year program.
- The Downtown Works low-interest loan program approved another loan for this popular downtown revitalization effort.
Our next ER Committee meeting takes place Tues., Aug., 13, at 11 am at the Sark Investments offices on Davenport street. All DRI members are welcome to attend.
Organization
by Joan Belongia, Chair - Volunteers are needed for the PotatoFest. Contact DRI at 715-362-7374 or Sally Latimer at 715-360-0066.
- DRI projects have been nominated and submitted for recognition at Wisconsin Main Street state level. Main Street Volunteer of the Year and Wisconsin Main Street Honorary Board of Directors have been nominated and submitted also. Announcements will be made in the near future. It was noted that there are many board members and other volunteers that do so much for DRI and we will work out a way to give them the recognition they deserve.
by Ray Burgan, Chair - The promotions committee is in its busiest season of the year. We have a full calendar of events and there is something for every age and taste. Consider joining our committee and making a difference in your downtown.

Meet the DRI Board of Directors
Each month we feature a current board member
Ray Burgan
By Sarah Juon
"Volunteering for the community is not only a lot of fun, but you meet new people and make good friends," says Ray Burgan, and lately, he has been giving himself plenty of opportunity to experience these benefits.
Currently, Ray serves on the DRI board as its treasurer and as head of the promotions committee. He also is a member of the School District of Rhinelander board, and is on the St. Mary's Hospital board.
Ray recently retired from his position of manager-owner of Enterprise Wood Products, a business he had operated since 2007. When not volunteering, he likes to fish, golf and cross-country ski, and spend time with his wife Ellen, son Christopher and daughter Jamie.
"The DRI board is a hard-working group," Ray says. "The members have the downtown's best interests in mind. The board has three big goals: to preserve the downtown area by decreasing the vacancy rate, so eventually there are no empty buildings; to improve the appearance of our facades so they look new and fresh; and to hold interesting events that will draw people to the downtown."
Ray was involved in the recent DRI-sponsored annual Car Show, held June 29 on Brown Street. "I think we had a great event," Ray says. "We made money, and everyone had a good time." The promotions committee is actively planning for the upcoming events: the Oneida County Fair, where DRI hosts its popular Beer Tent; Redikulus Dae on Aug. 7; and the annual ATV Pull & Pub Crawl on Aug. 17.
On Aug. 31 will take place a destined-to-become Rhinelander signature event: the first-ever PotatoFest.
"This idea has been kicked around for a long time," Ray says. "It's always been a question of how do you do it. How do you attract 10,000 people to the downtown? This year we decided to just take it on. It'll be a big celebration of Rhinelander."
"We've learned that events are what people like," Ray adds. "They're telling us it's fun again to be downtown."
At the top of Ray's wishlist for DRI is the desire for more volunteers. "We're always in need of volunteers to serve on the board, for our events, for the flower basket maintenance, you name it. I'd love to see more people participate in this great revitalization of our downtown."
Ray urges anyone interested in volunteering to call Director Maggie Steffens at 715-362-7374, or visit the website and fill out the contact form.

If you ever planned a party of any kind you know how much work it is. All of DRI's events could not happen without the support of our community. Thank you to our sponsors, our hard-working and dedicated volunteers, and you participants for the support you give. Should even one of these components not exist, the downtown, and in turn the community, would not be the strong unit it is. Thank you all.
See you Downtown,
Maggie Steffen

What's Up Mark?
Message by
DRI President Mark Gutterer Owner of Rhinelander Cafe & Pub The heat of the summer is on, and there are so many ways to enjoy it - whether it's on the golf course, the lake, or enjoying your time in the air conditioned comfort of your favorite downtown shop, restaurant or watering hole. The Hodag Country Fest has come and gone and we'll soon be having all kinds of downtown activities. Make plans to take in Redikulus Dae and the Oneida County Fair at the beginning of August, and on the final day of August be sure not to miss the First Annual PotatoFest, sponsored by Trigs. In between these events make sure to visit downtown where you can Stop, Play and Stay in air conditioned comfort.

Artist of the Month
Introducing
Bill Radant
I'm a transplant to Wisconsin, having been born, raised and educated in Oklahoma. My early professional life was as a professional musician and teacher and later as a priest.
I have always enjoyed the beauty of the Southwest, and now I am fascinated with the beauty of the woods and waters of the Northwoods.
My interest in photography began some 35 years ago while raising a family. Since retirement I have been able to devote the time necessary to develop the hobby into something more. I am basically self-taught, with advice from several trained artists along the way.
My hope is that my pictures encourage you to step into the picture and enjoy them as much as I did in creating them.
