Downtown Talk
Randy Zadnik of Zadnik's

We make everything from scratch, using all natural ingredients- no preservatives ... We are establishing our business,
Plate by Plate."

'Sno' Time Like the Present
Downtown Rhinelander has entered late February and early March with what your English teacher would have described as a "plethora "of snow!
What do we do with all this white stuff? For starters, every business in Downtown is required to clean the sidewalk in front of that business promptly after the snow has stopped. The City's job is to clear the streets.
So what about that hump of snow at the edge of the sidewalk but not in the street? In the words of City Hall, "That's yours, baby!" What annoys many as they attempt to go from their car onto the sidewalk is the problem of a few Downtown merchants who don't open a pathway from the street onto the sidewalk. Many do. So shame on the rest. The snow is causing folks to walk along on the street until they can find a shoveled opening. That's unfortunate because they just may have walked right past your business.
Downtown Rhinelander at present has a fairly large amount of snow separating the sidewalk from the street. Opening an area for easy access from curb to street will make it nicer for everyone if each of us tries to do our part to welcome shoppers to Downtown Rhinelander

Call Out for Volunteers
The Main Street Program works because of the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers and community support. Volunteers range from board and committee memberships to events and project participation. Volunteer involvement is truly the driving forces behind the program's successes.
Volunteers are welcome and wanted.
- Do you have an hour or two a month? Or more?
- We would love to have you as a volunteer.
- Please contact Maggie by phone or email at the DRI office.

Taste of Chocolate Revisited
|
Mel's Trading Post Tammy Flory and Hannah Bowen serve up the "taste"
|
by Dawn Rog
Where were you on February 8th the night of downtown Rhinelander's Taste of Chocolate? Visiting the businesses for chocolate treats? Or perhaps working at a downtown business that night? Dawn Rog visited with a few Chocaholics and Chocolatiers. Sally from 13 Gifts overheard one participant say "
I didn't know about this store, I will be back to shop."
More quotes from the Taste of Chocolates participants
"Thank you. The treats were delicious"
"Liquid refreshments were divinely chocolate"
"All the places that opened up their doors were inviting"
"The Pub did a great job with their Butterfingers"
"All the businesses put their best foot forward to welcome people"
"Great experience to just walk through the doors to see the variety of goods available"
"The fact that a church, Zion, opened up its doors with treats and tours was nice"
"Some of the sidewalks were quite slippery and difficult to walk on with snow packed on them"
"Walking into the House of Spirits you see how much they have to offer"
"So refreshing with all the flowers and lovely things at Trig's Floral and Forth Floral"
Clever Ideas from the Taste of Chocolate
Lund & Taylor
used Taste of Chocolate night to pass out their chocolate treats wrapped with a $10 Lund & Taylor Bucks coupon to be used on any sale dress thru February. She noted that sale dresses start at $10. If you have not used your coupon or did not purchase a Taste of Chocolate $5 ticket you missed out.
Rhinelander Brewery shared their Chocolate Bunny Stout Cake and gave everyone a recipe card so you can make it. Just purchase some of Rhinelander Chocolate Bunny Stout Beer available at downtown's Trigs and House of Spirits.

Mainstreet with Maggie
by Maggie Steffen, DRI Executive Director
My thanks to everyone; downtown businesses, community and visitors for making this year's Taste of Chocolate event the best one yet! Congratulations to the Printpack $1000 Downtown Bucks winner - Maren Zahn, Rhinelander.
March 16-17 brings another fun event, the St. Patricks Day Celebration which includes a Parade on March 16th. Please call Jack @715-369-3030 if you are interested in being the Parade. There is also a Pub Crawl and don't forget to visit the businesses downtown as many will have special hours, sales and discounts.
Hope to see your Irish Eyes a smilin that weekend in Downtown Rhinelander.

What's Up Mark? Message by DRI President Mark Gutterer, owner of Rhinelander Cafe & Pub The first annual POTATO FEST By the time you are reading this, the first planning meeting will have occurred. It's finally coming, starting this fall on Labor Day weekend, the first annual POTATO FEST. This promises to be a fun filled, action packed event. Many have talked about it, and now it is going to happen. Is there room for people to get involved? Who knows what direction this festival will take? What ideas do you have? Will your famous family recipe be judged the best? Will your grandchild win the potato sack race? Will we have music, food, fun? Yes to all three. Mark your calendars now and plan to participate in the first annual POTATO FEST. |

A BUY LOCAL business in downtown Rhinelander Dubl Digits 115 West Davenport Street 715-362-6234 www.dubldigits.com (on Face Book) Danielle Miller, owner of Dubl Digits, has been a BUY LOCAL business since last spring. "Any time that we can shop locally, we do." What is new? Dubl Digits is always trying new techniques and applications of our products to perfect what we find works. We are just getting the new spring collection of Shellac colors. This year they are pastel colors. I have recently added a new facial to our relaxing facial menu - the Repechage Biolight Brightening Facial. We also just installed a new pipefree Spa Pedicure Chair. ... now we can offer pedicures to two people at the same time. So, friends, mothers and daughters can have their pedicures together. We have several men that come to have either a full pedicure or just a monthly toenail trim. Dubl Digits has recently started to sell Isotonic health supplements. We are also selling and applying a makeup artist grade makeup. If you are interested, you may come in and we can apply the right color of makeup for your skin type and complexion. What ideas are you adopting that will change your business? Very soon we will be offering sugaring services to remove hair. This will most likely eventually replace waxing. We are replacing products with organic products whenever possible. We are always trying to be green. We continue our education and we use only the best products. We stay up on or licensing and really care to give the customer what they want without any surprises. We have retained many clients and strive to continue making people love themselves and their accessories (the nails). The end result: a happier you! (check out her brochure on her website) |

Meet the DRI Board of Directors
Each month a board member will be featured.
Although not a native to the area Pat has many ties to the community. As a child, while visiting her grandparents who owned property on Crescent Lake, she and her family spent a lot of time exploring the area.
Pat by profession is an interior designer and has owned and operated The Inside Story of downtown Rhinelander since 1981. Prior to that she attended the UW Madison, where she obtained a B.S. Degree in Interior Design, then took a job in the Milwaukee area before moving to the Northwoods. She was employed by the Sherwin Williams Co. as an interior designer prior to making the leap to establishing her own business. She has served as a juror for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification on a national level.
Locally Pat has been very active in the community as a member of the Rhinelander Rotary Club since 1987 serving as President in 1993. Also, Pat is a member of the Board of Trustees for Ministry Health Care since 1995, Board of Directors for the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce, Board member for Rhinelander Downtown Development Association, as well as board member for Downtown Rhinelander Inc. where currently she serves as chairperson for the Design Committee.
In her spare time, you may see her on the highways and byways on her bicycle enjoying the scenic woods of the Northwoods. Wintertime turns to the challenge of the ski slopes of Northern Michigan and beyond. And then to the golf course to chase that crazy little white ball around the fairways and greens of Wisconsin and the Southwest. Then there is still time for some fun in the sun in the Florida Keys where life is so laid back.
"The reason I joined the Downtown Rhinelander Inc. board of directors is my passion for history especially historic architecture and the preservation of it and the love for small town America - it is the heart and soul of our country and we need desperately to preserve it. What is found in our small towns is the uniqueness of our people, whether involved in a small business or just a local character of the community."
