23rd Psalm

Rev. Harbison

These familiar words by the Psalmist are our comfort in times of stress. Every funeral that I have participated in has used these words in some way, shape, or form. The 23rd Psalm is our standard funeral liturgy.

It's much more than that though. This psalm should remind us that when life is tough God is with us. It should let us know intimately about how God gives us comfort and peace. The 23rd Psalm is not a psalm for the dead but a psalm for the living, one that reminds us that God wants us to live the life abundant, as promised in Jesus Christ. The psalm doesn't end in death, but a reminder that God is with us every day of our lives and will be with us our whole life long.

Let's remember the 23rd Psalm not only in times of mourning but in times of peril and times of abundance. The 23rd Psalm is for all the days of our lives. May we use it to celebrate the grace that God grants us all.

Love,

A Closing Prayer
Eternal God, who was and is and is to come,
   you are Alpha and Omega,
   our beginning and our end.
In you, O God, we move and have our being.
Be the foundation of our strength,
as we seek to bring your kingdom here on earth.
Be the foundation of our courage,
as we proclaim your glory for all to hear.
We ask this in the name of the one
   who conquered the grave
to bring us eternal life. Amen.                                             By B.J. Beu from Abingdon Worship Annual
