Rev. Harbison
As we think about stewardship, I want to remind you about one of our lectionary stories that I preached on this week which reminds us what stewardship truly is. It's found in the beginning of 1Samuel and it is one of my favorite stories in the Bible.

Hannah is barren. This is a curse among Hebrew women. She is the favorite of her husband, but she is mocked and ridiculed by his other wife because she has children and Hannah has none. She is sad and has a sense of loneliness because of her inability to have children.

At the yearly celebration at Shiloh, Hannah quietly goes and prays with all her heart before God. She prays so hard she seems drunk to those who see her. She prays a prayer that empties her soul. She prays to God trusting in his graciousness.  God hears her prayers. Her son's name is Samuel, "I have asked him of the Lord".

Because of God's blessing to her, she returns that blessing to God by declaring Samuel a Nazarite, a chosen one and lets him be raised at the temple by Eli the Prophet. The light of her eye, the son she begged God for and when she is blessed with him, she returns him to God, trusting that God will do great things through his blessing for her. We know who Samuel is: The great prophet of Israel who anointed both Saul and David the King; the one who could hear God's voice in his heart and followed without waiver.

Remember this stewardship season who has blessed you and prayerfully consider and return a portion of that blessing to God. Let us see what God can do through our congregation and our faithfulness as we seek to hear God's voice and to follow it without waiver.

Have a blessed week,

ccscJingle Bell Express began as one of the first outreach programs of Christian Community Service Center and served 40 needy families in 1980. Due to the resounding support of many wonderful Houstonians this program has blossomed and in 2014 holiday joy reached 835 families and their 2,635 children through JBE.

St. Luke's has a convenient way for you to support the work of Jingle Bell Express with toys for the children this year. Loretta and David Elledge, will set up St. Luke'sToy Store on Sunday mornings (11/22 & 12/6) to give you a one stop shopping experience. They have selected age appropriate toys at reasonable prices ($15-20) and are open for business before and after worship.

A Closing Prayer

Lord God of all ages,

the One who is, who was, and who is to come,
stir up within us a longing for your kingdom,
steady our hearts in time of trial,
and grant us patient endurance until the sun of justice dawns.
We make our prayer through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.                                          from The Book of Common Worship
