Isaiah 147:3

Rev. Harbison

January and February are months known for something  you wouldn't expect....."The Blues". Depression seems to rise in these months. It makes sense really when you think about it. The holidays are over and all the excitement that goes with them. Spring is a month or two away and if you live in Houston, it rains a lot.

So what do we do when the blues strike us? Who do we talk to? How do we get out of our funk? The Psalmist reminds us that God "heals the broken hearted and binds up our wounds".  He is the one who pulls us out of our funk. He does this not out of any obligation, but out of his real love for all of us. How wonderful is that?

Take care and God bless,

The Souper Bowl of Caring
February 1

Our Confirmation Class has been busy over the last two Sundays telling you all about their Souper Bowl of Caring collection to benefit Star of Hope. This Sunday morning they will be asking you to make a contribution to make their collection a generous one!

The Souper Bowl of Caring began in 1990 with a Presbyterian youth group in Columbia, South Carolina. A simple pastoral prayer, inspired a movement: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat."  An aggregate of over $100 million has been donated to soup kitchens, food banks, and other charities in communities across the country since it's inception.The nation's biggest weekend of football is turning into it's largest weekend of giving.

Ash Wednesday
February 18 @ 7:00 p.m.

  ash wednesday We will observe the ancient practice of the imposition of ashes at our Ash Wednesday service February 18. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on foreheads as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. It is traditional that palm leaves used during the previous year's Palm Sunday service be burned to use for imposition. This solemn service signifies the beginning of our Lenten journey and occurs 46 days before Easter. Please join us for this meaningful service as we begin our Lenten journey to Easter.

A Closing Prayer

O gracious and holy God,
give us diligence to seek you,
wisdom to perceive you,
and patience to wait for you.
Grant us, O God,
a mind to meditate on you;
eyes to behold you;
ears to listen for your word:
a heart to love you;
and a life to proclaim you;
through the power of the spirit
of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.                       from The Book of Common Worship,
