Ellen's News from AMP

DC Project celebrates its conclusion May 25th

Eighteen months ago, the American Mural Project invited eight schools in Washington to participate in our DC Project, which pays tribute to people in government jobs. This fall, we visited each school, working with elementary- through high-school students and their teachers to create pieces honoring everyone from air-traffic-control personnel and U.S. military to teachers and city garbage collectors. Many students used the first words of the Constitution as the launching point for their pieces. The finished artwork will be on display in the eight district schools until April 1, before we collect it for our exhibit on May 25th on the National Mall.

The next step is to pull together what the students have created, without compromising their individual ideas - a good challenge for the artist.

With over 400 students and teachers, plus family, friends, and supporters, this will be the largest finish yet for a mural project -- if you're nearby, it's one not to miss, and we'd be thrilled for the help. Email shari@americanmuralproject.org

Watch Project

We are finishing this terrific project with over 9,000 watches donated to AMP by members of the GFWC, symbolizing their time spent in volunteer work in this country and around the world. The armature behind it will definitely need some extra steel.

A response like this only bodes well for our future activities together... Looking forward to Charlotte, NC in June and telling everyone about our upcoming project together, Faces Make Places. Get excited. This is going to be a blast.

GFWC Watch Project ends before our studio floor collapses under the weight of watches!

Dancers from the Callanish School of Celtic Arts (callanishschool.com) recently performed for members of the GFWC Windsor Woman's Club, prior to their monthly meeting.  Maggie Carchrie is the school director and she explained the various dances as they were performed. One of the highlights was when 3 dancers performed (Gillie Chalium) the Sword Dance.

Mary Hogan (Director of the Cora Belden Library of Rocky Hill and also a former Windsor mayor) and club member, Barbara Tolve-Silver

At the club's recent April meeting, members enjoyed a presentation by club member, Barbara Tolve-Silver, about the various support teams that are yearly put together by American Friends of Kenya to bring medical supplies, books, provide educational training for existing libraries, as well as assist in starting up new libraries. Containers are shipped by cargo ship and the volunteers who fly to Kenya (paying their own way), are allowed to bring three pieces of luggage (which they load with more supplies) as well as bring a carry-on, which contains their personal items.
