An extraordinary volunteer and guest
"I don't know where Eddie came from, or his story," starts Bridget Shaheen, Executive Director of Lazarus House, "all I know is that I love him. When I met Eddie, he used to walk everywhere - every day he would come here for his breakfast and lunch at the Soup Kitchen. Afterward, he would put down his crutches and by leaning on a mop he would wash the floor. In the winter, he would show up well before the Good Shepherd Center opened and shovel out the walk way so that the people who needed a warm meal would be able to get into the Soup Kitchen. Eddie always has the mindset of wanting to do good for someone else; he has the most positive attitude with the most negative circumstances of anyone that I have ever met!"
Living with the disadvantages of diabetes has not held Eddie back from doing anything he puts his mind to. After the amputation of many of his fingertips he decided to enroll in the sewing class. He learned to thread the needle in the machine and sew. He finished the training, studied for the test and graduated with both a certificate and a used sewing machine to bring home.
For twenty-five years Eddie has been living independently just a short distance from the St. Martha's Food Pantry. He has become a irreplaceable volunteer at our weekly food distribution. The team of staff and volunteers at the pantry speak very highly of him. Eddie has become, not only an inspiration, but everyone has a lot of "love and affection for him." Ken Campbell, Food Coordinator shared, "It's not possible to be around Eddie for more than a very short time before you start smiling. You smile by reflecting his smile and his laugh is very contagious."
"You never have to ask Eddie to do anything because he's always asking you what to do next. He helps sort food, stocks the shelves and volunteers on the community distribution day. Eddie does all this despite his physical limitations. He has had some real difficult medical experiences, but he is always willing to help!"
When asked to be part of the team of walkers from the Food Pantry for the Hike for Hope, Eddie quickly replied, "Yes! Just help me get my wheelchair there and I will do whatever you need for help!"
On Sunday, October 6, 2013, please consider joining the many walkers gathering at Merrimack College to fundraise for the programs and services of Lazarus House. Perhaps, you'll see Eddie there with his team . . . and a great, big smile on his face! To register online go to www.hikeforhope.org
