Corpus Christi: An Easter Jesus Tradition
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me . . .I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
Mother Teresa always remembered these words of Jesus. She said that she saw the face of Jesus in the face of each sick and dying person she helped. She asked the whole world to look for Jesus' face there, too.
In 1988, when the AIDs epidemic was new and people were being ostracized from work places and their homes, Lazarus House wanted to open a ministry for those people living with some stage of the illness. Property was owned at the foot of Tower Hill in Lawrence, but the idea was met with anger by the neighborhood association and ultimately the city rejected the zoning change necessary to open a group home there.
During the next five years staff and volunteers did what they could for people with the HIV/AIDs disease. Bridget Shaheen recalled, "We tried to help by bringing them to the doctor, or have them in to sit and talk so that they knew someone cared, or with some people it was as simple as a hug because so many of them hadn't been touched by a bare hand in so long."
After five long years, Lazarus House found a new property and Corpus Christi was opened. The name, Corpus Christi [Latin for "Body of Christ'] was chosen because these people were met with disdain just as the lepers were in Jesus' time.
"It was with great sadness that many didn't live to see the opening of this building," shared Shaheen. "A Corpus of Christ was made by one of our volunteers that symbolized our struggle during those difficult times. The entire body is decoupaged with articles that were written in opposition to the project. Superimposed over these articles are the names of many of our friends who passed away while waiting for a place to call home and die with dignity.
Every Good Friday we take this Body of Christ down from the cross to represent that the job of Lazarus House is to always take Christ down from whatever cross He hangs on. Whether it is the cross of poverty, discrimination as a result of hate or fear, or whatever it is at that given time. . . and to care for him to the best of our ability."
