Moving obstacles for a better life
When Bridget Shaheen, Executive Director introduced Glori to the crowd that had gathered for the Hike for Hope Team Leader kick-off she explained, "You will not forget her message. You will not forget her. You will be as amazed and thrilled as we are to be able to make things possible for people like her, who are so wonderful and really need no more than to have the opportunity to demonstrate that to the world!"
"When you look at me, you might not see that I am a homeless person, but I am," began Glori, a resident of Capernaum Place. "There are a lot of stories . . . and I am honored to be one of the people who are able to share my story with you. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for Capernaum Place, it has given me that step to be able to move ahead."
Glori is enrolled in the Intermediate EMT Certification class at Northern Essex Community College, a rigorous 6-month training program that consists of classroom work, field exercise and drills. She excelled in the program, making Deans list and recently was accepted into the Paramedic program; only 19 students are accepted a year! Glori's goal is to give back to the town she grew up in and hopes someday very soon to start work as an EMT in Lawrence.
After listening to her speech, Shaheen said, "What you [Hike walkers] and I do is help to move some of the obstacles that are in their way so that the people at Capernaum can make a better life for themselves. The residents have lived such a difficult life, but in spite of all that, they manage to turn their lives around; we are gifted to witness it!"

Micki is a 'Top Ten' Hike Fundraiser
 | |
R to L: Bridget Shaheen, Karen Gershman & Micki LeBlanc at the Hike for Hope walk in 2011
|
by Christine Blain For the past 26 years, Micki has devoted her life to serving the Lawrence community through Lazarus House. "I knew when I came here to serve people it would become my vocation," reflected Micki. She now translates for families who come in to the shelter and thrift stores, making them feel comfortable and helping them find exactly what they need. Micki works with Lazarus House's three thrift stores and pickup & delivery box trucks, allowing her to work directly with members of the Lawrence community who are in need of help. "Micki has a good rapport with a lot of the community people," said Hike for Hope Event Manager, Bridget Galvin. "Her favorite quote is 'I can sell ice to eskimos."
And sell, she does! Sells the idea and importance of the Hike for Hope, that is. Micki has been among the "Top 10" in fundraising for the Hike for the past several years, bringing in thousands of dollars every time with the help of her four-person team.
"I start six months early and I just ask everybody - people on the phone, those who donate to the store, my relatives and friends. If they already know what a great job Lazarus House does, they just say, 'how much?'."
But why the Hike? After all, Lazarus House has a number of other events throughout the year. "I like to raise money for the Hike because, to me, it helps people get back on their feet, and it gives them hope for their future."
You can join Micki and the rest of the Hike for Hope team by volunteering in various ways - whether you're checking people in at the event, helping to organize food and entertainment, walking the five-mile route, or being part of the clean up crew, each and every person's efforts will make an invaluable difference to the success of the 2012 Hike for Hope. Sign up today to walk and/or volunteer at hikeforhope.org.

Inspiring words
A testimony by Hike for Hope walk founder Dave MacGillivary
What does the word TEAM mean to you? It begins with a '
T' which stands for together; only together can we make this Hike work!
With the 'E', we strive for excellence in what we do; shoot high and raise a lot of money to help Capernaum Place!
'A' is for accomplish. Everyone registered in the walk has done something - you have given back to others; that is an accomplishment!
The most important letter, is 'M' and that we all motivate our teams to excel. As leaders we constantly motivate our team and collectively, everyone in this room motivates each other!
Thank you for answering the call and for being there for the residents of Capernaum Place transitional shelter!
