Grading Rubric: Engage Students & Save Time
Research Evidence
Students can only improve if they know what to improve upon. When the grading process for an assignment seems arbitrary or vague, student motivation declines, as does their work. And faculty explanations and office hours can increase. Specific feedback on classwork, along with suggested improvements, gives the student a sense of control, of competence, and of professor investment in their academic progress. Focused feedback keeps the student engaged and willing to persist when facing challenges.
What To Do And Why It Works
Creating a grading rubric for assignments and projects takes some upfront time, but it gives students quality feedback and can save you considerable time from student confusion or grading issues.  Working with your TAs in constructing the rubric helps them understand how to use it.

Students will appreciate your feedback while you benefit from improved student motivation and effort!
