We are 28 households. We range in age from less than a year to more than 80 years. We are 26 women, 19 men, and 17 youth aged 16 and under. We work from home, commute within New Hampshire and to Massachusetts, and enjoy retirement. We attend public and private schools and we homeschool. We own our homes and rent. We value sustainability, community, farming, having fun, and living lightly on the earth.

Greetings!

We'll soon be celebrating our 5th anniversary of living together as a cohousing community. We've come a long way from when we started with a vision of community and land in West Peterborough. Our common meals are delicious and fun, our residents are actively pursuing many interests, our farm is bountiful and its soil health improving, and our energy and activities are radiating out into the wider community. Lots of the work of starting up the community is under our belts. We now turn to the process of reflecting on our successes and challenges, and refining our understanding and our processes.

To mark this passage from "start up" to young community, we're making a transition in our blog and newsletter from reporting our activities to sharing our newfound understandings. We believe sharing our experiences may be meaningful and useful to you in thinking about a move to cohousing. We plan to publish the newsletter more regularly (about every 6 weeks), focusing on conveying practical information in thematic issues. Forthcoming topics may include: intergenerational living, birding in the region, raising outdoor-oriented kids, NH's political scene, beekeeping, green living, educating our kids, local yoga, sustainable energy use, successful project collaboration in community and sharing, and much more. If you have topics you would like to see covered, let us know.

Our first topic in the next few blog posts (and newsletter) is cohousing - what it is - and the opportunities it offers. Read about the cohousing experiences of some Nubi neighbors and consider some words of wisdom on the traits that make one a good fit for cohousing.

Would you like to know more after reading? Consider checking out the links to more information we provide, liking our facebook page so you are the first to know about upcoming events, exploring our website, or joining us for an upcoming open house. We hope you will also forward our newsletter or blog along to others who might find it interesting or illuminating.

Warmly,

Personal Reflections/Lessons Learned - Four Years at Nubi (by Johanna)

Nubi is a feast of sensations in late May: lupines bloom on a lupines on the front lawnwildflower lawn, wood frogs trill urgently through the night, tender asparagus and delicately sharp radishes offer delightful new tastes to the farm palate. As we approach our fourth summer here, I'm keenly aware of how Nubi has changed since we moved here in 2008. Excavators drove past our door, the landscape was mud and rock piles, we began getting to know many new people in our lives, and, together with them, make choices about how to live together in a community.

A confluence of many interests brought our family to Nubi, including sustainability, farming, freedom for kids, a beautiful setting, high-quality, energy efficient homes, and proximity to family. read more...
