President's Message
David A. Kelly, President & CEO

David Kelly

Two way communication

Recently, I've had a few reminders that communication is a two-way street. Not only do you need to carefully craft your message, you also need to consider your intended audience and ensure that they are receiving the proper message.  Personality, age, preferred method of communication, and previous experiences all play a role in how even the simplest of messages is received.

Be sure to ask for and give feedback when communicating with someone.  This is the best way to ensure that the message delivered and the message received are, in fact, the same. Remember playing the game telephone as a kid? I used to play with my cousins.  We would tie two paper cups together with a string and then pull the string tight. One person would talk into the cup the other person would put the cup to their ear.  The game could go on and on with as many people as we had available to play, but in the end the final listener would tell the initial speaker what the message they heard was. Normally that got a lot of laughs, because the final message was not even close to what the original person had sent.

That kind of miscommunication may be a fun game for kids, but is detrimental in a business environment.  We all need to take the cup from our mouth and put it to out ear to see if the correct message has been received.

Have a great week everyone!
