President's Message
David A. Kelly, President & CEO
Celebrate Freedom
One of my favorite holidays came and went during April, but I didn't hear a lot of hoopla about it. According to the Tax Foundation, National Tax Freedom Day was celebrated on April 18 this year. For those of you unfamiliar with the holiday, it is the symbolic first day of the year when Americans start keeping the money they have earned rather than having it go to pay federal and state taxes. This year, state and federal taxes made up 29.4% of income. When plotting that out on a calendar, Tax Freedom Day fell on April 18, which was five days later than in 2012 due to increasing taxes.
Because each state has different levels of taxation, the Tax Foundation also calculates Tax Freedom Day on a state by state basis. Here in Oregon, we were able to celebrate three days earlier - on April 15. My poor friends back in New York haven't celebrated yet. Their Tax Freedom Day doesn't come until May 6.
Let's work together with our elected officials to ensure Oregon businesses and residents will continue to celebrate early for years to come.

TriMet awarded $400,000 grant to test pedestrian warning systems for buses
TriMet will be working with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to test the newest generation of pedestrian warning systems for buses. The FTA awarded us a $400,000 grant for the project. The FTA could have awarded multiple grants but instead awarded the total funds - $100,000 more than we requested - to TriMet. The FTA indicated our proposal had the most comprehensive approach to demonstrate the effectiveness of multiple warning systems.

Transit Police officers dramatically reduces smartphone snatches
TriMet and the Transit Police Division (TPD) are cautiously optimistic this spring won't see a repeated spike in smartphone robberies thanks to the hard work of two TPD officers, credited with thwarting the group behind the majority of the smartphone robberies last year. After a sharp increase in smartphone snatches last April-May, TPD increased patrols, conducted undercover missions, scoured TriMet security cameras and video and dedicated two officers to investigate the robberies.
