From Board Chair
David Russell, Adventist Health / Adventist Medical Center
Success or Significance?
Recently I was privileged to hear San Francisco Giants baseball star Dave Dravecky tell his story. Dave's key thought was the most important accomplishment in life is not success but rather significance. I will come back to that thought.
When Dave was young his father shared two important life principles with him. First, find your passion and pursue it with your whole heart; and second, enjoy what you are doing and have fun. Dave's passion was baseball and he pursued this passion with everything he had making it to the big leagues and playing in two World Series championships. Then in 1988 cancer in his throwing arm forever changed his life. Ultimately, Dave had to have his arm and shoulder amputated. In baseball, Dave's success was measured by how good his arm performed. Dave's identity was tied to his arm, which was now gone. Dave had important decisions to make about how he would choose to live with his new reality as an amputee with no job. Dave's faith in God, his father's principles, "find your passion and have fun doing it", and the support of his family and close friends helped Dave find a new life focus and passion. Dave began sharing his story of successfully facing life changing disappointment.
Through his own life experience, Dave discovered life is not about success but rather significance - defined as making a positive, lasting difference in the lives of those we have opportunity to influence each day - coworkers, friends and family. As business leaders let's make the choice to define our success with significance.
