President's Message

Join the Challenge!
Happy New Year, Chamber members! I am looking forward to a great 2013 and Your Chamber is kicking off the year with a great contest. Do you like helping your friends? Do you like getting discounts on Chamber events or your Chamber membership? Would you like to win a gift basket of prizes from fellow chamber members or even $500? Then participate in the Board Challenge -- a contest to encourage current Chamber members to recruit new members. The contest is already underway and ends at noon on March 20.
The purpose of this, or any other chamber of commerce, is to bring the business community together to do those things we cannot do on our own. To build on our past successes and to develop new and exciting offerings, membership growth is essential. Who better to explain the benefits of membership to your fellow business owners and managers than you - our current Chamber members? You are people who have the stories to share about how Chamber membership has benefited your business and given you ways to help your community grow and prosper.
Each member of the Board of Directors has committed to personally recruit two new chamber members by March 2013 and have challenged YOU to see how many members YOU can recruit. As I mentioned, there are prizes available: everyone will receive $20 in Chamber bucks for each new member recruited, there will a gift basket of prizes for the member who recruits the most new members, and every member who recruits a new Chamber member during this contest will be allotted one raffle ticket per member recruited for a grand prize drawing of $500. Membership forms are available on the chamber website. Good luck with your recruiting and in the grand prize drawing!

Veterans' stories ARE being preserved! The Wings of Freedom continues to collect and preserve the personal stories of the WWII era
The Wings of Freedom had the privilege of interviewing and video graphing Sam Hall Sr. Hall is a 97 year old WWII Veteran, who served in the Army infantry radio communications. He had the ability to paint a picture of his story. His story was enlightening. It also clarified just how involved the Air War was and its importance to the victory of WWII. That is why these stories are so important! Each one offers a unique perspective and experience. Click to view his story.
Hall's unique story will be compiled with others that have been collected to produce a documentary of interest. Their hope is to educate a new generation about a by- gone era. An era of people who rallied together for a common cause, who did what they had to in order to survive and a generation of people who persevered!

Public donations needed to purchase K9 Officer
The Milwaukie Public Safety Foundation this month kicks off a fund raising campaign to purchase and train a replacement K9 Officer for the Milwaukie Police Department.
One of Milwaukie PD's K9 Officers, Jag, was recently diagnosed with bone cancer, and despite all attempts to find an effective course of treatment, very sadly had to be euthanized. Jag was purchased for the police department by public donation and was a very much loved part of the department and the City of Milwaukie. The Milwaukie Public Safety Foundation has started a campaign to purchase and train a new K9 Officer, again by public donation.

Going to the game? Fares are required
Taking TriMet is a convenient way to get to and from the game, but now that the Free Rail Zone is no longer, sports fans need to remember fares are required on MAX. For the first part of the winter sports season, TriMet staff has been reminding MAX riders heading to the Rose Quarter that they need a valid fare. Beginning Monday, Jan. 7, fare enforcement efforts will be stepped up.
