After disappointing December and January snow conditions, winter has done a "180" here in Birkie Country! Snow conditions on and around the Brikie Trail have improved dramatically. A week ago, both the popular Pre-Birkie and North End Classic Ski races had big turn-outs, perfect snow conditions, and happy racers! Birkie Trail parking lots have been full lately, and skiers are out making up for lost time on snow. Finally, no need for rock skis! With this week's forecast shaping up, a full-length 40th Birkie is a sure bet!

New Moon To Outfit First American Birkie Champ, Sam Ersson!
New Moon is proud to be outfitting the champion of the 1973 American Birkebeiner with equipment for the 2013 Birkie. Sam Ersson and his wife, Helena, will coming be coming from their home in Sweden to stride one on the best trails anywhere. It is great to see Sam coming back and it will be good to see an extra Founders Bib out on the trail with the other founders. We think Sam will be pleased to see where the Birkie has come since 1973. Sam will be skiing the Classic Birkie. Look for him out there, and give him a shout of encouragement! Thanks for coming back to the Birkie, Sam! |
New Moon Birkie Waxing Service and
Wax Reports

New Moon will again be offering professional race waxing services for 2013 Birkie. Relax before the race; let us deal with the wax panic for you! Birkie race waxing has been a hugely successful service for New Moon with hundreds of satisfied, repeat customers. Every pair of skis is treated as we would treat our own, and many customers repeatedly beat their own best time or placement year after year. Our waxing gurus carefully consider the forecast as it evolves during the week, and with careful testing and consultation with experts across the industry, they choose only the best possible waxes for race day. |
We are not contracted with any particular wax brand, allowing us to choose any product or brand we feel is called for. New Moon's Birkie waxing is offered on a first come, first served basis. This is a popular service and may fill to capacity. View our Birkie Waxing Menu for complete details. Choose from low-fluoro or pure-fluoro glide waxing, as well as kick waxing options. Final wax choices are made Thursday and Friday only after the weather forecast stabilizes. Be sure to drop-off your skis scraped and stripped of all kick wax. Dirty skis will incur additional clean-up charges. All Birkie waxing is done off-site, final coats are applied late Friday, and finished skis will be available for pick-up at New Moon Friday 2-22 from 5PM to 7PM, NOT SOONER!
Note: Our Birkie kick wax application provides optimal kick on the climbing-intensive Birkie and Korte Trails. Classic participants that prefer flat-out speed in lieu of kick should consider kick waxing their skis themselves based on their preferences and experience. And always, classic skiers need to carry some kick wax and a cork and have a back-up plan if conditions change or more kick is needed. We'll provide recommendations for back-up waxes.

New Moon has also partnered again with TOKO Wax and SPORTHILL apparel for the Birkie Nordic Expo on Thursday and Friday, the 21st and 22nd. We'll have side by side booths stocked up with the best from those brands and staffed by brand reps to assist you. Expo hours are 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The expo is at the Hayward Middle School again for 2013. Stop by and say hi! |
