It's Snowing in Hayward
Snow (or lack thereof) has been a popular topic lately. With some TLC from the remarkably talented Birkie Trail Crew, and a whole bunch of awesomely wonderful snow in the last few days, we've got some fantastic skiing again! The Birkie Trail, North End Trails, Seeley Trails, and Telemark's "IPC" loop and other Telemark trails, are all producing smiles right now. The skate deck is flat and the tracks are deep.
We are posting trail updates frequently on New Moon's Facebook Page. Check it out for new reports and other fun tidbits. Stone Grinding - Show Your Skis Some Love!
Valentine's Day is around the corner, and it's not too late to stone grind your favorite race skis - show those skis some love! Now is the perfect time to grind for the Birkie and other mid- and late-season races because there is plenty of time to harden and condition the bases with wax. Stone grinding will flatten and refresh old, worn out bases that no longer absorb wax. Our special, ultra-low-pressure final pass process provides hairless, race-ready bases. Only waxing is needed. Our Ski Sauna Hot Box Wax treatment will fully saturate the base pores minimizing your post-grind prep time. If you have to grind shortly before a race, don't worry - a freshly ground ski that is hotboxed and properly waxed will still be much faster than a rough, worn out ski base. Grind and race with confidence!
New Moon will be accepting skis through the end of business hours - 4pm on Sunday, February 17th for our last stone grinding batch before Birkie. Due to time constraints Birkie week, we are unable to take any stone grind skis later than the 17th. Skiers are welcome to ship skis to us before the deadline, then pick them up at the shop during race week or send them right into our Birkie Wax Service. For the Birkie, typical race conditions often fall safely into the "overlap" range for both our "OMW" cold grind and our "Uni" grind. Casco Optics Are Back - Now With Three Lenses!
After some trouble with North American distribution this fall, Casco Nordic Spirit Shields are back in stock. We now are offering these in two versions: the "Vautron Lens" version with 3 different, photochromatic lenses - dark for sunny conditions, amber for flat or variable light, and clear for low light or those who prefer no tint. Photochromatic lenses adjust tint automatically based on light intensity. Also offered is a non-photocromatic version featuring dark, amber and clear lenses. The Nordic Shields all feature highly fog-resistant, articulating “flip-up” lenses, allowing easy access to one's face, better ventilation if fogging becomes an issue, or unobstructed visibility for biathletes, for example. Choose from small/medium or large/extra large frames. Casco shields are our most popular optics, hands-down.

Ned Zuelsdorff to Retire as Executive Director of American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation
Our fellow skier and friend, Ned Zuelsdorff is hopefully going to spend a little more time skiing next year having completed eight years of service to the American Birkie. During Ned's tenure he doubled participation and was instrumental in adding new events and trails – making the Birkie the amazing event is is today. Thanks for all your hard work, Ned! Inaugural Double O - Double Demo
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Double 'O' Double Demo on December 29th, hosted in partnership with our friends at Riverbrook Bike & Ski. Well over 100 skiers tested the latest gear from some of the best brands in Nordic. Our Fischer and Rossignol Demo Center ski and boot fleets were well received and praised by many. With our limited snow cover this season, this would not have been possible without the always amazing grooming support from the crew at the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. Please thank them next time you see a groomer out there!

IPC Nordic World Cup 2013
We were again humbled this year by the amazing athletes competing at the recent IPC Nordic World Cup event held at nearby Telemark Resort in January. The IPC is the international governing body for Paralympic events. The New Moon Crew was fortunate to meet many of the teams and athletes from around the world. A huge thanks goes out to the army of volunteers that made IPC 2013 possible and make Birkie Country truly a venue for world-class events. |
Telemark featured on The Travel Channel
Speaking of Telemark, the fabled resort was featured last week on The Travel Channel program Hotel Impossible. Program host, Anthony Melchiorri, helps Telemark's staff and owners streamline and improve operations. It's pretty cool, check it out.

New Moon Birkie Waxing Service
New Moon will again be offering professional race waxing services for 2013 Birkie. Relax before the race; let us deal with the wax panic for you! Birkie race waxing has been a hugely successful service for New Moon with hundreds of satisfied, repeat customers. Every pair of skis is treated as we would treat our own and many customers repeatedly beat their own best time or placement year after year.
Our waxing gurus carefully consider the forecast as it evolves during the week, and with careful testing and consultation with experts across the industry, they choose only the best possible waxes for race day. We are not contracted with any particular wax brand, allowing us to choose any product or brand we feel is called for. New Moon's Birkie waxing is offered on a first come, first served basis. This is a popular service and may fill to capacity. We encourage skiers to drop off, or ship their race skis ahead of time to avoid the last minute rush. If you ship your skis, have them arrive by Tuesday 2-19, and include complete payment and contact information. View our Birkie Waxing Menu for more details. Choose from low-fluoro , pure-fluoro glide waxing, as well as kick waxing options. Final wax choices are made Thursday and Friday only after the weather forecast stabilizes. Be sure to send or drop-off your skis scraped and stripped of all kick wax. Dirty skis will incur additional clean-up charges. All Birkie waxing is done off-site, final coats are applied late Friday, and finished skis will be available for pick-up at New Moon Friday 2-22 from 5PM to 7PM, NOT SOONER!
Note: Our Birkie kick wax application provides optimal kick on the climbing-intensive Birkie and Korte Trails. Classic participants that prefer flat-out speed in lieu of kick should consider kick waxing their skis themselves based on their preferences and experience. And always, classic skiers need to carry some kick wax and a cork, and have a back-up plan if conditions change or more kick is needed. We'll provide recommendations for back-up waxes.
