Volunteers Needed: Unsheltered Homeless Count
Our community recently achieved a milestone: more than 2,500 chronically homeless individuals have been housed since January 2012! As we continue to move toward the goal of ending chronic homelessness by the end of this year, the partners of The Way Home have organized and will be conducting an Unsheltered Homeless Count from August 17 - 31, and we need your help!
The Unsheltered Homeless Count will take place Monday, August 17 - Monday, August 31 (excluding weekends), and each day the count will be concentrated in one Houston City Council District. Volunteers, outreach staff, and others participating in this campaign will meet at 7:30 am at the designated staging area to begin activity. Activity will not go past 4:00 pm, but can end earlier depending on the district.
If you have participated in the 100,000 Homes Registry Week or the annual Point-In-Time Homeless Count, this Unsheltered Homeless Count will be very similar. Volunteers are needed to assist staff to count and/or interview people who appear to be homeless or are panhandling in each district. The goal of this effort is to know all of our unsheltered homeless neighbors by name and to ensure that they are connected to services that can help them end their homelessness.
When signing up, please choose all possible dates that you are available to assist. City Council districts will be assigned to specific dates, and volunteers will be notified of their district(s) and staging area(s) during the week of August 10.
