The annual Point-In-Time Homeless Count is a requirement of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for our local Continuum of Care funding process, which brought more than $24 million to the Houston, Harris County, and Fort Bend County homeless assistance programs in the FY2013 application process.

On the night of the 2015 PIT Homeless Count, volunteers will be placed at designated staging areas across Houston, Harris County, and Fort Bend County, and teams will be deployed by 5:30 pm. Each staging area will have highly trained volunteer Captains and Co-Captains who will be available throughout the night for questions and assistance during the count. There will be at least four people per team: one driver, one navigator, and two counters.

For additional information, please contact Gary Grier at ggrier@homelesshouston.org or 832-531-6006.

We look forward to seeing you in January!
2014 In Memoriam

The annual In Memoriam will be held on Sunday, December 21, at 2:30 pm, at The Beacon (1212 Prarie Street), to honor those homeless individuals who passed away during 2014. The In Memoriam is held sometime around the first day of winter each year in cities throughout the United States.

The names of those who have passed away will be read. Individuals interested in volunteering for this year's event should register to volunteer at The Beacon on the day of the In Memoriam, as The Beacon operates solely on volunteers.

A distribution of blankets, coats, gloves, hats, etc. will be coordinated through 1,000 Hills Ministries during their Church Under the Bridge service (2800 St. Charles St.), at 4:00 pm on December 21. If you are interested in donating items for the distribution, or for more information, contact Scot More at smore@homelesshouston.org or 832-531-6008. Building Better Services with Medicaid

The Coalition for the Homeless is offering a training called "Building Better Services with Medicaid" on Wednesday, December 17, from 1:30 - 3:30 pm, at the Harris County Department of Education (6300 Irvington Blvd., Room 502). Registration is limited to 70 individuals; click here to reserve your spot online.

For many individuals and families, success in housing depends on the availability of supportive and health care services to help retain housing and use housing as a platform for health, well-being, and recovery. HUD has recently expressed the need for improving program participant access and effective utilization of mainstream healthcare services at the systems level. This training will be an introduction to Medicaid resources and coordinating care and services among case managers and available primary, preventative, and behavioral health care services through United and other Managed Care Organizations who insure individuals on Medicaid.

CEUs will be offered for LMSWs, LPCs, and LCDCs. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Gary Grier at ggrier@homelesshouston.org or 832-531-6006.
