September Lunch & Learn, "Coordinated Access: Houston, We Have Liftoff!"

The Coalition for the Homeless will present its third Lunch & Learn of 2014 on Tuesday, September 9, from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm at the United Way of Greater Houston. Click here to RSVP.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's new regulations require that all Continuums of Care (CoCs) develop and implement a coordinated assessment system for all CoC-funded programs. The Houston/Harris County CoC began implementation of a Coordinated Access system in early 2014. This presentation will review the system progress to date and allow questions from area homeless services providers. Ana Rausch (Coordinated Access Project Manager, Coalition for the Homeless), and Heather Muller (Program Manager, CSH) will present. CEUs will be available for LMSWs, LPCs, and LCDCs.

Lunch will be provided and RSVPs are required. Click here to reserve your spot.

Please contact Gary Grier at 832-531-6006 or [email protected] with any questions.
The Proof Is in the Numbers

In a 60 Minutes special, Becky Kanis of Community Solutions (creators of the 100,000 Homes Campaign), said, "we are paying more as taxpayers to walk past that person on the street and do nothing than we would be paying to just give them an apartment." A 2002 study supplies proof to that statement (illustrated below) and shows that the Housing First approach really does work.
Training: Harm Reduction

The Coalition for the Homeless, in conjunction with CSH, will be providing Harm Reduction Training in September. This free, full-day training will be offered on two days (please only register for one day): Wednesday, September 17 (at the City of Houston HCD Conference Room, 601 Sawyer St., Houston, TX 77007) OR Thursday, September 18 (at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 815 Crosby St., Houston, TX 77019). Click here to register. Click here to view the flier for more information.

Harm reduction strategies offer practitioners interventions to reduce the impact of barriers such as substance abuse and mental illness on a person's ability to meet tenancy obligations. This one-day training is designed for service providers working to help homeless people access and/or retain permanent housing. The session will overview the concept of Harm Reduction and its application to various special needs and conditions during the housing access and stabilization phases of work. The Stages of Change framework, Housing First principles, and current practice in addictions and mental health will be integrated into the session. Case reviews will be used to illustrate the concepts. Suzanne Wagner, LMSW; Principal Partner with Housing Innovations will present. CEUs will be offered for LMSWs, LPCs, and LCDCs.

For more information, please contact Gary Grier at 832-531-6006 or [email protected].
