End of the Year HMIS Forum
You're in for a treat!

Come help us celebrate this year's accomplishments as we look forward to next year's achievements! There'll be games, food, and fun to be had by all those in attendance with an extra special surprise for some lucky person/people! This is not your average HMIS meeting. It's a time to relax and get to know your fellow HMIS partner agencies.

If you plan to attend, please send an email to HMIS@homelesshouston.org with a head count for your team, program, and/or organization. Hope to see you there!

Continuum of Care Grant

The Continuum of Care grant process is in full swing! Our community is working diligently to renew grants, respond to HUD's questions about our community's strategies and progress in ending homelessness, and awarding approximately $3.7 million in annual sustained funding for new permanent supportive housing.

If your agency is working on a new or renewal application, please make sure you're doing the following things:

  • Look for emails from Pamela Wyatt, CoC Grant Director. If you are not receiving them or need assistance, please contact her at pwyatt@homelesshouston.org
  • Participate in CoC Steering Committee Meetings where decisions about this year's funding are being made. Contact Marilyn Brown for more information, mbrown@homelesshouston.org
  • Watch HUD's webinars about grant specifics, sign up for their listserv, and read their responses to questions submitted by grantees.

If you are interested in applying for a permanent supportive housing grant in the future, now is the time to begin learning about the CoC grant and planning for next year's process!  Contact Curtis Wilson to learn more about permanent supportive housing, cwilson@homelesshouston.org.

In Memoriam

While sleeping on Houston's sidewalks, near its bayous, and in our shelters, some of our neighbors face their deaths every year. Sometimes it results from chronic illness, sometimes after a lifetime's struggle with trauma and pain, and sometimes because of violence. For every life that has ended among us, we want to stop and acknowledge the loss that person's family, friends, and community are experiencing. Please join us on December 21 to remember people who have died while homelessness.

If you would like to volunteer or provide donations, please contact Scot More, 832-531-6008, smore@homelesshouston.orgor visit our website.

Youth Count!
Piloting Methods for Understanding Youth Homelessness

We do not yet have a thorough understanding of how many youth become homeless after being kicked out of their homes, running away, having negative experiences with the foster care system, or exiting jail and prison with nowhere to go. In fact, not many communities do. As part of this year's Point In Time Count, the Houston/Harris County Continuum of Care is one of nine communities working to pilot methods for more accurately counting and surveying unaccompanied youth who are homeless. Homeless teens and young adults have a unique set of challenges and needs, and understanding their needs is one of the first steps toward developing solutions.

We need your help! To participate in the Youth Count!, please contact Whitney (Fleming) Patterson, wpatterson@homelesshouston.org or 832-531-6001.

The United States Interagency Council on Homelessness is supporting the efforts by hosting webinars by leaders in the homeless youth field including Eric Rice, Jama Shelton, and Martha Burt.

The Houston Point In Time Enumeration & Street Count
How many people are homeless in Houston, Harris, and Fort Bend counties? How are veterans, families, children, and vulnerable populations affected by homelessness? The Coalition for the Homeless works to help answer these questions by conducting an annual Point In Time Enumeration and Street Count, and your help is needed in this extremely important task. Over 500 community volunteers are needed to conduct the Homeless Count. Please complete the volunteer sign up form to help out!

This information helps provide the basis for federal, state and local funding to address the issue and, more importantly, helps us analyze this region's needs and develop and implement strategies to prevent and end homelessness.

2013 Point In Time Enumeration and Street Count Dates:
January 15 - training from 5:30 to 7:00pm
January 22, 29 - count from 5:30 to 11:30pm

Where: All of Houston, Harris, and Fort Bend Counties. Staging areas have been assigned near your neighborhood.
To learn more about the volunteer opportunities, check our website or contact Gary Grier, 832-531-6006 or ggrier@homelesshouston.org.

New Website
You have probably noticed that the Coalition has a new website!  While we love the polished look, we know there are still a few kinks to work out.  If you notice a link that does not work or have difficulty finding a page, please let us know, efetahagic@homelesshouston.org.
