Bye-Bye Cell Phone
Tassajara Zen Center
Pt. 3

Not one ringtone was heard.  Heads were bowed, but not over iPhones.   Instead, folks were soaking or chatting or reading or just sitting.  Maybe they were sunning nude on a boulder, bag lunch unpacked, at the Narrows.  Perhaps they had found a shady spot and were taking a snooze.  Those were the guests, of course.  The students were working, changing sheets, preparing meals, making coffee.  But one thing no one was doing was surfing or texting or emailing.  No Facebook check-ins or color-correcting in Instagram.  No checking the latest match in OKCupid or fanning the obsession with Candy Crush.  No binge watching the first season of Orange.  Nope, none of that.  The plug had been pulled. The connection to the "outside" was cut.

I am not important enough to require 2 cell phones, like those that get a paycheck from a financial institution.  One is enough for me.  I'm blessed, and thankful daily, to have DNA without the addictive gene.  But, that doesn't keep me from, what shall I call them, "propensities" or "habits".  What I have is the average everyday vanilla-flavored addiction with my phone.  Not a big one, but a small one nonetheless.  Addiction to booze or sex or Texas hold-em is socially unacceptable, but the addiction to "devices" is promoted, even encouraged.  At least I'm not a gamer.  Some 53% of American adults age 18 and older play video games,1 and about one in five adults (21%) play everyday or almost everyday.

Losing wifi and cell serviced to the valley depths of Tassajara was particularly easy.  There was no service, like on an airplane.  You had no choice but to self-entertain to find something else to do with your hands. There was no temptation or willpower needed.  Upon arrival a fellow guest suggested I put my phone on airplane mode, to keep my phone from "searching".   So that's what I did.  Note, I did not turn it "off".

I was surprised to find that the lack of cell service or wifi did not keep me from checking my bars.  I had seen satellite dishes behind my cabin, so there must be service (I thought).  Over the first few days, I found myself handling the phone, flipping through photos, taking pictures as if I needed some ""hands-on, tactile time" with my phone.  It still sat on my nightstand, acting as an alarm clock in case I overslept the 6:15 wake-up time or the afternoon nap.

It's interesting and maybe even comical to take a look at our obsessions, not in a shameful, "aren't I a bad person" way, but a bit more clinically.  The mind gets patterned.  It slips into "give me more chocolate" or "where's my data" mode.  The challenging part is having the presence or wisdom or skill to see those obsessions and say "Hey there obsession,  what's up?  I see you".  I got to say "hello" to mine at Tassajara.

Next week.....More Tassajara! (Preview: There was a fire.)

Should you lock your knees in Yoga? by Leslie Kaminoff

Lock your Knees?
Is this a good instruction or not?  According to anatomy guru, Leslie Kaminoff, it depends on what you're trying to accomplish, stability (lining up the leg bones without muscular effort) or flexibility (unlocked to allow movement).  Mr. Kaminoff says it better, of course, in this video above.
Wonder What Your FitBit Sees and Doesn't See?

Your activity tracker works with an accelerometer.  Accelerometers record changes in motion relative to the device: up and down, side to side, and front to back.  This article shows what and why your activity monitor sees and doesn't see.  Beautiful graphics and animation.

Stomach Pulling for Superior Digestion

The Hanging Stomach
Who knew the stomach likes to hang.  According to Dr. John Doulliard, Ayurvedic practitioner, the top side of your stomach can get stuck to your diaphragm.  Really?  He's got a method for self-correcting called stomach pulling.  Dr. Doulliard has a strong reputation, so it's no bs.  I'm not recommending it, just passing on information.  You know what I mean?

It's all here
Everything Passes
Really, everything and everyone.

This week, B.K.S. Iyengar, at age 95, left us.  Mr. Iyengar is credited for helping bring yoga to the West and his influence on the yoga that we practice today is profound.  After surviving tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria as a child, he credited yoga with saving his life.

The Sebastopol yoga community lost one it's own, Brad Parker. Brad was a talented and respected yoga instructor, an avid rock-climber and athlete.  At age 36, he slipped off a Yosemite mountaintop soon after proposing to his girlfriend,  He will be missed by all.

No One Special to Be
"When we bring awareness to our cherished self-images, such as our need to be special, they begin to lose their power over us. No longer puffing ourselves up or trying to stand out means we're coming closer to living like a white bird in the snow. That is, we no longer feel the inner compulsion to see ourselves or be seen in a particular way-there is no ulterior agenda. "

- Ezra Bayda, "No One Special to Be"

Be Happy on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an
most-levels vinyasa flow class.

On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class.  Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day.  A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.

You'll be done at 6:00!!  That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch.  Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
