 Tassajara Zen Center Pt. 3
Tassajara is a working monastery, but If it's May through September, it's guest season. The rest of the year is the "practice period" where students are offered an intense period of residential practice, including daily zazen (seated meditation), lectures, classes, work and close contact with their teachers.
During this "training period" of about 100 days which is offered in the fall and winter, students spend a big chunk of the day seated cross-legged, outward facing in the zendo, eyes softly cast downward. Their meals, 3 small bowls of rice, soup and vegetables, will be served to them where they sit. Their morning bell calls them to the zendo at 3:50 a.m. When their day begins they will have taken about 6 ½ hrs of shut-eye, if they plan it right.
But, this is the guest season and Tassajara turns into a kind of retreat center where the students (and some guests) are there to serve, as in cook, clean, manage and change sheets.(1) There are workshops and yoga retreats, like the one that I was on. Visitors come for days or weeks. Many do a work exchange, spending time each morning helping in exchange for a break on their cost of housing and meals. The income from the guest season supports not only Tassajara largely but contributes to its siblings, San Francisco Zen Center and Green Gulch Farms.
The yoga classes used to be held in the zendo, after the zabutons, zafus, chairs and whatever, had been cleared. After, everything had to be carefully returned to their designated spots to prepare for the next meditation period. Not any more. Now there's a new structure, with a wood exterior that blends with its surroundings with a modern, Architectural Design look and feel.(2)
The yoga room surpasses any I've seen and I've seen a lot. Twenty foot ceilings with clerestory windows (remote opening windows), cork floors and pale yellow walls. Three bladed modern fans and large, classic George Nelson bubble lamps gracefully hang from the wood-slat ceiling. There will be no suffering with the smartly cultivated collection of yoga props, including Manduka mats, cork blocks, yoga chairs, 10 ft straps, firm bolsters and multi-colored blankets. Add zabutons, zafus and backjacks. During the hot days, the yoga room was the coolest spot, at least before 3 p.m.
During the guest season, the students still attend morning and evening meditation. At 5:15 when the first call is sounded, it's a gong being struck by a fat wooden striker, which looks like a log. It echoes through the valley. Soon thereafter it's the sounds of bells, like sleigh bells. Someone is literally running paths sounding Tassajara's unique alarm clock. A bit later there's more gongs to indicate decreasing time until the first sitting of the day where the students (and some guests) will join together for the morning session of meditation. The rest of us return to our peaceful sleep. An hour or so later comes the faint sound of chanting voices from the zendo as students finish their morning session. For me, it was time to rise and shine. Part 3 coming next week!
(1) Whether it's tending to the altars, serving meals or washing dishes, this work is considered an essential part of practice, not separate from the practice of meditation.

The Hanging Stomach
Who knew the stomach likes to hang. According to Dr. John Doulliard, Ayurvedic practitioner, the top side of your stomach can get stuck to your diaphragm. Really? He's got a method for self-correcting called stomach pulling. Dr. Doulliard has a strong reputation, so it's no bs. I'm not recommending it, just passing on information. You know what I mean?
It's all here.

 Urdhvadanurasana (Wheel)
Full wheel, backbend or in Sanskrit, Urdhvadanurasana, is a challenging pose, at least for me. It asks for maximal extension from the front body. Leslie Kaminoff & Amy Matthews' authors of Yoga Anatomy offer their instructions for this liberating pose here.

No One Special to Be
"When we bring awareness to our cherished self-images, such as our need to be special, they begin to lose their power over us. No longer puffing ourselves up or trying to stand out means we're coming closer to living like a white bird in the snow. That is, we no longer feel the inner compulsion to see ourselves or be seen in a particular way-there is no ulterior agenda. "
- Ezra Bayda, "No One Special to Be"

Yoga in India vs. Yoga in America
Moving from South India to the Pacific Northwest, yoga was a link to this yogini's homeland, yet the contrasts were stark:
"There is so much yoga around here, that it was and continues to be exciting for a yoga geek like me. America is a nation that seems to have an excess of everything, and yoga is no exception."

Be Happy on Fridays!
Instead of shots of tequila and fried artichoke hearts, spend your Friday happy hour moving and grooving at an most-levels vinyasa flow class.
On Friday's from 4:30 - 6:00, we'll end each week with an energetic vinyasa flow class. Through building heat from the inside, we'll strip out the stress hormones from the day. A long rest at the end of class will reset our nervous system and prepare us for our weekend.
You'll be done at 6:00!! That'll leave plenty of time for dinner with friends, a movie or a relaxing evening with your pooch. Or, maybe a Chia filled Kombucha or that 100% agave margarita!
