Summer 2015

Hello! I hope everyone's summer "break" is going well. I imagine most of you are teaching, dissertating, or working that summer job. As the summer winds down, remember to take some time to relax, get outside, and, of course, check out this summer edition of Future 411! This issue is all about transitions. Whether taking on a new role at the university, preparing to enter the job market, or shifting career paths altogether, we all face major career transitions at some point. In order to help you tackle the twists and turns of your own career path, we've selected some interviewees who are currently taking on new professional roles.

In the first, bittersweet, interview, we bid farewell to Annie Piatt, our Graduate Student Program Manager, as she leaves Career Services this month to embark on a new adventure. She has been an amazing mentor to myself and to many others on campus, and I know we will all miss her outstanding guidance and enthusiasm. Make sure to check out her interview, in which she discusses her career path and imparts some final words of wisdom. On a happier note, I also have the pleasure of welcoming Alaina Nickerson, who will be taking over the position. Read the interview to get to know our new Graduate Student Program Manager and her perspective on the new role. Last but not least, I speak with Richard Bateman, the newly elected president of UGGS, about his thoughts on leadership, student involvement, and his reasons for undertaking graduate study.

Take some time to read these three fabulous perspectives on career transitions, and make sure to stop by the Career Services office and welcome Alaina to CU!

Happy reading!

A Fond Farewell
Graduate Program Manager Departs on New Adventures
Interview by Trish Bredar

Annie Piatt earned her Master's degree in Higher Education from Harvard University. She attended The Master's College, a small liberal arts college in Southern California, where she studied Hebrew and Greek because of her love for learning languages and her family's linguistic influence (her parents speak French, her older sister is fluent in Spanish, and her younger sister sings opera in four languages). She originally came to UCB over ten years ago, and has worked in Housing & Dining Services, Human Resources and Career Services. When not at CU, she also teaches and performs with Frequent Flyers Aerial Dance Theater.

In this farewell interview, Annie shares the winding path her career has taken thus far and offers some final advice to CU grad students. "As a career counselor, I often encourage people to bravely and honestly explore what most aligns with their strengths, interests, and values and now I have the opportunity to do just that in a very non-traditional way. It's very exciting to get to put into practice the advice and career development lessons I've been sharing with students for the past four years." Read the full interview here

Changing of the Guard
Career Services Welcomes New Team Member
Interview by Trish Bredar

In this interview, we welcome Alaina Nickerson, who will be taking over the position of Graduate Program Manager later this month! Alaina holds a Bachelor of Arts in Educational Ministry with minors in Psychology and Youth Ministry from Seattle Pacific University. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling from Colorado Christian University. Alaina is originally from the San Juan Islands in Washington state. She has a twin brother, and her Subaru outback is named "Esmeralda the Gypsy Wagon," a nod to her dream of being nomadic and living in a vintage travel trailer. She also tends to have recycling rattling around in her trunk-a sure sign that she's meant to live in Boulder!

Read on to learn more about Alaina's career path, her experience with career counseling, and her words of wisdom for graduate students, as well as her hopes for her role at UCB. "You'll be the expert on your subject and field. I'll be the expert in the job search and career development as well as a tireless gatherer of resources.  We'll put our heads together and develop effective strategies to get you where you want to go and keep you sane in the process!" Check out the full interview here.

UGGS President Plans for Progress
Interview by Trish Bredar

Richard Bateman received his M.S. in Atmospheric Science from the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department here at UCB and his B.S. in Meteorology and Applied Mathematics from Metropolitan State University of Denver. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Atmospheric Science in Dr. Weiqing Han's research group and is the newly elected president of the United Government of Graduate Students (UGGS).

In this interview, Richard discusses his new role as president of UGGS, his goals for the organization, and his ideas for further collaboration between UGGS and Career Services. Read the full story to learn more about Richard's own graduate school experiences and for great advice on getting involved with campus organizations! Check out the interview here.

Professional Advice

The Chronicle of Higher Education

"From Academe to Market Research"

By Donny Wong

In this insightful article, Wong shares his experience translating his Biological Sciences Ph.D. into the world of market research. In addition to providing an interesting account of his own unique journey, Wong also offers useful advice for graduate students considering a major career shift and/or a non-academic job search. I recommend that anyone who is interested in pursuing opportunities outside the academy take a look at the full article, here.
