Welcome Back!
In this inaugural edition of 2015, we are excited to celebrate several new beginnings. As January winds down, it is time to take the first steps towards fulfilling your New Year's resolutions, and it is never too early to begin thinking about what steps you can take to support your career. My professional New Year's resolution as the Graduate Student Program Manager is to connect with more of the graduate students through department workshops, individual appointments and outreach. Please contact me directly if you would like to set up a customized workshop for your department or graduate student group.
You may notice a few changes going forward with the newsletter. We are now linking directly to the articles on our new website so you can more easily go back and access the wealth of information from previous editions. As we begin a new year and chapter with the newsletter, this edition also gives us an opportunity to celebrate an ending as we say farewell and thank you to Annie Sugar for her two plus years as editor. Annie's enthusiasm for career development and the graduate student population has been inspirational. She has done a fantastic job as editor, and together we have seen the newsletter grow from a distribution of a few hundred to all 5000 graduate students. I wish her the very best as she wraps up her PhD to embark on the next phase of her own career journey, and I will greatly miss collaborating with her.
As Annie departs, I am excited to welcome and introduce our new editor, Trish Bredar, who will surely put her own spin on the Future 411. Trish is a first-year MA in English here at CU Boulder. She received her BA in English from Centre College, a small liberal arts school in her home state of Kentucky. As an undergrad, she served as Senior Editor for Vantage Point Magazine, Centre's student literary publication. She also completed a marketing internship with the University Press of Kentucky. Welcome Trish! I am so glad to have you joining the career services team, and can't wait to see how you continue to bring relevant career information and resources to graduate students.
In her first edition, Trish does a great job drawing out the expertise of interviewees Annie Sugar (outgoing Editor and PhD candidate in Media Studies) and Ann Herrmann (a Buff Alumna and Career Services employee). Both of them discuss the importance of networking, making early commitments to focus on your career, and the power of informational interviews as strategies for career exploration and job search. Annie and Ann also share fantastic resources that you can take advantage of as you begin thinking about how to prepare for your career in the midst of your academic endeavors. Trish has also selected a few articles from LinkedIn, the Chronicle and Grad Hacker that add to this New Year's resolution edition.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and schedule an appointment with me or another one of our career counselors. We look forward to supporting you on your journey to define and reach toward your own career goals in 2015.
All the best,
Annie Piatt

Standing at the Crossroads
Interview by Trish Bredar
Annie Sugar received her BA and MA in History from James Madison University. She also completed her MA in Mass Communication at the University of Florida. Drawing from an impressive collection of academic and work experience, not to mention the collective knowledge of many issues of Future 411, Annie offers up a few words of wisdom.
"My ultimate career goal is to use my degree to blaze a path for myself that leverages my career experience and degrees to provide the greatest benefit to society. I'm just still deciding what shape that will take...It's really quite empowering to stand at the crossroads."
