North Star Fruit Shares

The DEADLINE to signup for this year's CSA Fruit Share from North Star Orchard (for pickup at Pennypack Farm) is March 15. That is the 'Ides of March' or 'National Ag Day', whichever way you prefer to think of it...and it's only 2 weeks away!

Remember, you must be a Pennypack Farm member to sign up for pickups here. An alternative if you are not a farm member this year is the Resurrection Lutheran Church pick up spot just around the corner, but there are only 20 shares left for there, so hurry if you want that location.

This is not ordinary fruit, but unique and heritage varieties which are full of flavor: plums with pizazz, perfect peaches, amazing Asian pears, astounding apples, and great grapes!

PFEC Farmers in the News
Lancaster Farming featured PFEC and it's support of WWOOFERs (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms) in this week's publication.  Farm Manager, Devin Barto and Kirstie Jones, Farm Apprentice, were interviewed - Kirstie was a WWOOFER before applying to our Apprentice Program.

Diane Diffenderfer
Notes from the Edible Classroom
by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

It feels like Spring!  I know it's been a fairly mild Winter; however, cold is cold and I, for one, am ready for warmer temps, longer days, shorts & sandals.

Here's a brief update of what going on at the farm:

1. As we recently noted, we will not be farming any more at The Highlands.  As such, we've been very busy closing down that portion of our operations.  Toward that end, we've:

  • Moved out of the Gardener's Cottage;
  • Moved most of the farm equipment to Horsham; and
  • During March, we will move our remaining equipment from the barn, garage and fields to Horsham.

2.  The seedlings are up and looking great!  Thanks to our new vacuum seeder, the farm crew has been able to cut seeding time by as much as 75%!

3.  We've hired a new Apprentice, Stephanie Jones.  Steph was an intern last summer and is looking forward to joining her sister, Kirstie.  Steph will start on April 18.  Welcome back, Steph - we are looking forward to having you on staff!

4.  We've hired 2 of our 3 Summer Interns.  If you know of a college-aged person interested in learning about organic vegetable farming, please either ask him/her to contact me, or let me know and I'll make the connection.

5.  A local Scout will be installing 2 new raised beds in the Edible Classroom; one will be ADA compliant.

In addition, I'm working on both on- and off-site educational visits for our staff.  These visits are an integral part of our farmer education program and we are committed to provide the best opportunities for our staff.

Finally, I'd like to draw your attention to a matter of extreme importance to not just us, but thousands of Pennsylvanians.  We depend on the Extension Service for a variety of educational programming, including our adult education classes and our farmer education program.  The statement below was taken from an email I recently received from PSU Ag Sciences:

"Governor Wolf has zeroed out all funding for our land grant college programs such as Master Gardeners, 4H, Penn State Extension, our county agent and agricultural research at Penn State.  If you wish to show support to re-instate funding, here is a link to a petition, or you contact the governor and your representatives. If you aren't already aware, Penn State extension offers many free and low cost educational programs on topics ranging from canning, to pruning and lawn maintenance, to sustainable ag, to starting an ag business.  https://www.change.org/p/restore-funding-to-penn-state-college-of-ag-sciences-research-extension-programs."

Thanks very much for supporting the farm and PA Ag Sciences!

Enjoy the week, looks like a beauty.
