Notes from The Edible Classroom - 2015 Recap
by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

For the past few years, I've been steadily introducing the Edible Classroom at The Highlands to local schools and camps as a field trip destination.  This year, I was delighted to welcome kids from several schools and camps to the farm.

Visiting students learned what it means to "eat locally and seasonally", viewed honey bees close up using our new observation beehive, made bird feeders and talked about why having birds on the farm is beneficial.  They had fun arranging flowers, talking with and helping the farmers with everyday farm chores and delighted in eating veggies while standing in the fields!  This is what farm-based education is all about and I'm glad we've been able to share our farm with so many kids.

In addition to kids' programs, we again offered a variety of programs for adults.  These adult programs are open to all adults; not just our CSA members.  The Sustainable Film Series is one of the hallmarks of these adult programs. The dates for the 2016 Series have been selected and we are now focused on setting up the discussion panels, vendors and also talking with community supporters interested in becoming a Sponsor for the Film Series.  If you, or someone you know, might be interested in participating in helping with the Series, please contact Laura Briggs at lkbrhe@comcast.net.
Finally, last month we said farewell to Jenny Moore and Emilyn Fox, our second year apprentices.  For the last 18 months, Emilyn and Jenny have worked hard in the fields, revamped our farmers' market stands, participated in educational programs on and off the farm and, in general, really learned what it takes to manage an organic vegetable farm.  They also worked with kids as part of our education programs, attended job fairs where they spoke to folks about our programs, and shared the farm with countless volunteers.  They even attended a career day at a local elementary school and delighted the kids with their experiences about working on the farms!  I miss them everyday and wish them well in what lies ahead.

Hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving - safe travels and enjoy those wonderful farm-fresh veggies!
