Farming in the Family
by Kirstie Jones, Highlands Apprentice
Kirstie Jones & Family
Kirstie, Robin & Stephanie
When you walk into my mom's house it is easy to tell that it is home to several working farmers.  There are boots for all seasons in the front hall, tomatoes and melons fresh from the fields sitting on the kitchen counter, dirty footprints on the steps and squash plants growing in the garden.  With three of us working on three different farms (my sister, Stephanie, as an intern at Horsham, my mom, Robin, as a seasonal farmer at Two Gander farm in Downingtown, and myself as an apprentice at the Highlands) our house is never without fresh produce and good conversation. My sister and I have been farming for several years but this is the first year that my mom has also been on a farm crew, and it has been so much fun sharing my love of this profession with her.  At the end of the day we are always excited to share stories about our respective farms and engage in passionate debates over farming techniques, crop varieties, weeding strategies, and the many other nuances of organic growing. While my mom has had many careers (auctioneer, travel agent, Pilates instructor) I can see that like my sister and I she has realized that her first love is working with the earth; although our days are not easy and we are sometimes too tired to do the dishes, we all know that we could not imagine waking up to any other job!

In Need of Market Work-Shares
The Highlands farm is in need of Two Market Work-Shares from now until November.  One Work-Share for the Ambler Market on Saturday Mornings in Ambler and one Work-Share for the Oakmont Farmers Market on Wednesday afternoon/evenings in Havertown. You will be on a rotation with two other Work-Shares for each respective Market so you don't do market every week. Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds.  Your hard work will be rewarded with a 10 unit vegetable share at the Highlands. If you or anyone you know is interested or would like more information please contact Ray at  ray@pennypackfarm.org .

2016 Film Series Update
PFEC at the Movies
For the past 3 years, Brooke Marshall has been the primary volunteer force behind our annual Sustainable Film Series.  She's selected trailers for consideration and secured the films, lined up sponsors, pulled together the panelists and worked with the Ambler Theater to make sure each event runs smoothly.  Recently, Brooke has decided she needs to step back from the series.  We are delighted that PFEC Board member Laura Briggs has offered to step in and learn the ins and outs of creating a successful film series.  Laura and Brooke are already working together to ensure a smooth transition.

If you see Brooke in and around Ambler, please thank her for her tireless efforts!  We will miss Brooke and wish her well in her future endeavors!

If you've been thinking about offering to help with the film series or if you have a film to suggest for the series, please contact Laura at lkbrhe@comcast.net.

Farmer Education & YMCA Camp at PFEC
by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

Farmer education is a topic near and dear to our hearts and mission. A few weeks ago we hosted a CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training) field day at The Highlands and this week we hosted another CRAFT workshop and a PSU Extension Service field walk at Horsham. These events offer a wonderful opportunity to welcome farmers to Pennypack Farm & Education Center to share ideas and learn from each other.

In addition, we again hosted the Hatboro Horsham YMCA Farm Camp.  We had 4 days of farm chore and arts & crafts projects.  The kids also made salsa from ingredients they harvested and met a few hens.  Perfect weather with lots of smiles and new-found friends.
