Name that Tractor
by Ray Cross, Interim Highlands Farm Manager

New tractor for the Highlands
Send name suggestions to ray@pennypackfarm.org

I would like to introduce the newest edition to the Highlands Family, our new tractor!  With all the money that we were able to raise through Localicious and the very generous donations that we received we were able to purchase a much needed new tractor.  We purchased a 1975 Allis Chalmers 185 diesel tractor on February 26 and it just arrived to its new home on March 4th.  This tractor will be used in our day-to-day ground preparation before we plant any of our wonderful vegetables and flowers.  The Allis Chalmers will also be used to spread compost-although we will miss borrowing Devin's tractor for this activity and driving it down Ft. Washington Ave. in the middle of rush hour traffic.

As some of you may know, we have names for our tractors at the Highlands, Morris is the big Kabota tractor with the bucket and Louise is our small cultivating tractor. If you have a name suggestion for our new Allis Chalmers or want to stop by the Highlands to see it please email Ray.  Thank you to everyone who was gracious enough to help us get this new tractor; this will surely be our best season yet!

PFEC Seeks 1st Executive Director
by Heather Hahn Sullivan, Board President

Pennypack Farm & Education Center is entering an exciting new chapter! As part of a reorganization, we're very pleased to announce that we will soon be hiring an executive director!  Previously, we had a farming director (Andy) and an administrative director (Margot).  Through a strategic planning process with the board and these two dedicated directors, we're moving to a different model.

Andy Andrews has moved on in his career as a recognized farming consultant.  He still works with us on a consulting basis, and represents PFEC and our area on the board of PASA, the Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture.  Margot Bradley is happily retiring to a smaller role with the farm, working on special projects.

We are looking for the right person to fill the new executive director position, someone who has a passion for local food and sustainable agriculture, along with management and non-profit leadership experience. Is that you, or someone you know?  Please take a look at the job posting on our website, and help spread the word!

Thank you for your support of Pennypack Farm!

Notes from the Edible Classroom

by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

Our seedlings are not the only thing growing at the farms; our winter staff is happy to have a few new faces join the ranks - our 2 new 1st-year Apprentices - Ryan Hogan and Kirstie Jones officially started this week as did Katelyn Melvin, our new Assistant Farm Manager at Horsham.

Ryan Hogan Ryan Hogan - Ryan has a great resume for our 2-year Apprentice Program.  He attended art school, in Maine, has first-hand experience in a variety of restaurants and spent a season working on a start-up CSA farm in NY.  He's helped build a barn, planted several acres by hand and represented the farm/produce at local farmers' markets.  Here's what Ryan said about small scale, organic farming, "It has also reaffirmed my belief that this is important work that needs to be done, and important knowledge that needs to be preserved, developed and passed along."  We couldn't agree more.

Kirstie Jones Kirstie Jones -  Following her 2014 graduation from Middlebury College, Kirstie did what she loved.  She continued her 10 year tradition of working on horse farms and learning about organic/sustainable farming.  In Kirstie's introductory e-mail to PFEC she wrote, "While searching for a new farm to call home, I was immediately drawn to PFEC's inclusive focus on incorporating the community into the farming process. ...I also believe the unmatched educational opportunities provided by the 2-year apprenticeship would provide me with the foundation I need to continue in my farming pursuits."   We are delighted Kirstie found us.

We'll "formally" introduce Katelyn in the next Pickings.  Suffice it to say she brings additional, and varied, depth and breadth to our experienced team of awesome farmers!

Welcome aboard everyone, we're very glad you are here!

Devin BartoGetting Ready for Spring
by Farmer Devin Barto

The past few weeks have been very cold as I sure you are aware. This is also the time of year when we are starting lots of transplants and planting crops into the hoophouses for early spring and summer crops. We have delayed a little of the hoophouse plantings for a few more days to make sure that many of the crops don't experience single digit lows over night. Luckily the days are longer and the sun is higher in the sky which warms the soil quite nicely in the hoophouses. We haven't experienced to much damage from these cold temperatures but it has delayed planting by a few days. In general with these cold temperatures it is only inconveniences like frozen hoses and greater costs to heat our propagation house for seedlings for the summer. I am hoping that the bitter cold knocks back some of the insects that build up in our soils as last years cold did!

Even with the bitterly cold temperatures the farm is transitioning from the doldrums of winter, to the fast paced time sensitive activities of spring. Starting next week,we will have two more folks join the crew to keep up with the ever increasing workload as we move towards the summer CSA season. The staff is  feeling rested, and starting to get excited about the long days of planting, cultivating and harvesting ahead of us. Believe it or not, next week we will be staring the first round of eggplants, peppers, followed by tomatoes!

If you haven't already, sign up for our Summer 2015 CSA.  We are looking forward to a successful year. We look forward to seeing you around the farms.
