Devin BartoWinter at the Farm
by Farmer Devin Barto

December and January have departed signaling the days are indeed getting longer. After this weeks CSA harvest, we will be replanting one of our greenhouses. I haven't touched a seed in a few months now, and early February is a time to  Greenhouse start planting spring mixes for spring salads. The first summer onions were started last week and will live in the flats in the greenhouses until the soils gets warm enough for their roots. CSA posters were handed out, and placed in every local business and community space in Montgomery county to make sure people have an opportunity to join us for the 2015 season. Runs to pick-up bulk supplies, equipment and tools; one or two per week to make sure we have everything that we need, so we need not leave the farm in the long summer days when the to-do list is pages long. Fixing up this piece of equipment, repairing that. Kneeling on the cold ground, clutching a cold wrench to loosen the oil plug; taking the time to make sure our equipment gets a spa treatment to be ready for the season ahead. When it snows, we walk the fence line to see what animals get in and where; their prints showing us where the most attention is needed.  We are enjoying the stillness of winter, but very aware of the task ahead. I remind myself to walk just a little slower, sleep in just a little longer; as all the extra rest will pay off in September.

I hope everyone is enjoying the winter. With the snow on the ground and overnight temperatures in the teens, now is a great time to Sign-up for the 2015 Summer CSA.  I'd love to see your name added to the list!
