PFEC HARVEST FESTIVAL
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4
Harvest Fest 2013
CALLING ALL BAKERS & COOKS!

The PFEC Harvest Fest is Saturday October 4, 2014. This year, we are trying to stick to items that are consistent with the farm offerings.  Do you know of a great recipe using vegetables in the recipes. These tasty offerings could be sweet or savory.  We hope show case what is growing now at the farm, and an easy delicious way to transform those items. They do need to be easy to serve though.  Please email Meghan Coleman.

CALLING ALL MUSICIANS!  Volunteer Musical Acts Needed for Harvestfest.
Are you a musician who can entertain an audience for between 30 and 60 minutes?  As in past years, we plan to have between four and six small musical acts for Harvestfest.  We are looking for variety of styles, especially kid friendly music. We prefer Pennypack members, and they will receive volunteer credit.  We will also need non-member musicians, so please pass the message along.  If you're interested or just have questions, please contact
Dave Lazarus

PFEC HARVEST FESTIVAL
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4
Devin on Tractor
Save the date of Saturday, October 4, 2014 for the annual Harvest Festival at the Horsham Farm. Open to the public, this is a wonderful family-friendly event with lots of activities for the kiddies. Vendors, food, and hayrides!

Traditionally, our Harvest Fest is held the first Saturday of October. We realize that for 2014 Yom Kippur is observed on that date.  We understand that many folks may not be able to attend Harvest Fest this year as a result of these overlapping events. We will miss those whom cannot be with us on October 4.

CONVERSATIONS OFF THE FARM!
By Diane Diffenderfer

From time to time, I am invited to speak at various gatherings.  Last week I had the pleasure of attending a program hosted by The Ambler Food Co-op.  The special guest was Bonnie Acker from Burlington, VT.  In short, Bonnie has worked tirelessly over the last 25 years to bring fresh veggies into Burlington's school cafeterias!  Her work is truly inspirational.  I was afforded the stage and talked about collaborative efforts PFEC is forging in our corner of the world.  There were folks from the Wissahickon, Upper Dublin and Hatboro Horsham School Districts in the audience and we all agreed we want our kids to have great tasting and nutritious lunches.  School gardens provide a nice entry into getting fresh veggies into the hand of kids and PFEC is delighted to be helping schools with the logistics of setting up and maintaining their gardens.  If you are interested in learning more about what Bonnie is doing in Burlington, check out this link.  As I told Bonnie, we are still in the baby step phase, but check us out in 20 years!  If you'd like to talk to me about help with a school garden, please email me at education@pennypackfarm.org.

NEEDED - Preschoolers at the Farm!

By Diane Diffenderfer

If you have a child aged 2 - 5, please consider attending our classes at The Highlands. For the month of September, I am offering a one-hour class from 10 - 11am.  Class size is limited to 8 and to be honest, registrations have been low. I understand people have many options for their little ones and I ask that you consider including PFEC in the mix. Today's class was sparsely attended and I'm concerned that if registrations remain low, I will not be able to offer the classes; which is heartbreaking.

The kids who attend have a great time and we do all sorts of very interesting activities.  Today, one girl make beautiful pictures from the leaves and flowers she'd collected and pressed a month ago.  A little boy collected leaves and flowers to make his own pressed plants.  We also collected monarch and tomato hornworm caterpillars, set them up in a outdoor chamber and will now check weekly on their progress towards becoming butterflies and a moth.  Of course, we collected and ate our fill of cherry tomatoes and learned about the dreaded squash bug!  If you have a youngster and are free from 10 - 11 on Tuesday mornings, please sign up for a class!  REGISTER ONLINE
