Thank you to everyone who participated in the

Sustainability Film Series -
Sponsors, Panelists & Attendees.

We had an almost sold-out crowd of 250 people attend the last film of the series - GMO OMG.

Looking forward to a bountiful summer CSA season and seeing everyone at the 2015 film series.

Thank You!

With your generous donations Team Pennypack Farm raised $3298 in the Walk Against Hunger!  These funds will help us provide fresh vegetables to low income families throughout our growing area.

Walk Against Hunger

Thanks to everyone who came out to walk (2 and 4-legged) on a beautiful Saturday!  Way to go team!  Special thanks to Kristy Gregory for her leadership and inspiration!

Like us on Facebook!

Whether you like facebook or not, it has become the easiest and most convenient way for businesses and organizations to let their supporters, audiences, and customers know what what is going on day by day.

We have begun updating our facebook page on a more regular basis.  Here you can find posts each day showing what is going on at each farm with regular photo and video updates.

Like us on Facebook

In order to get these posts on your facebook news feed, you should like our page,
and also periodically make a comment on the posts.  Facebook has a formula that, if you are "active" on a particular page, they will send you the updates on your news feed, i.e. your facebook "home page".

So check it out!  Several farm members and farmers have recently joined facebook specifically for this purpose - just to follow farm news and events.  No, we don't own stock in facebook nor do we have any other interest in it other than keeping in touch with all of you for farm news!  Thanks.

Herb Beds

New Workshare Opportunity
Cutting Herbs Coordinator

The culinary herbs at the Horsham farm grow in 16 raised beds.  The Cutting Herbs Coordinator organizes the volunteers who will provide the watering and weeding of those 16 beds during May to October.  Skills needed:  email communication (up to 2 hours per week), gardening knowledge, spreadsheets.

The majority of the tasks can be done from a home computer.  Sometimes the position involves going to the farm to help plant the annual herbs, to orient new volunteers on their first time at the beginning of every month, or fill in for someone, so it is best for someone who does not go away for the summer. Susan Curry, the former volunteer coordinator, will provide training and sample documents/messages.

A 10-unit workshare is being offered for a dedicated person to accomplish this role.  Please apply immediately to Devin Barto:  devin@pennypackfarm.org

Diane Diffenderfer Notes from the Edible Classroom

by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

Staff Lunches:  Once a month, the entire PFEC staff has lunch together.  The farms take turns hosting and the host farm's staff is responsible for cooking the meal.  In a word, these lunches are amazing!  Not only do our farmers know how to grow great veggies, they are, to a person, well versed in the nuances of cobbling together great flavors and textures!  Oh, and the lunches generally have a theme; last week it was chili.  We had 3 distinct chilis - one featuring bison, another using venison and a final recipe using all veggies!  We also feasted on salad, corn bread and rice.  These lunches are just one more way we strengthen the bond between the 2 farms.  The collaboration between Horsham and The Highlands has been terrific and continues as the farm staff transitions from the winter share season into the summer share season.  I'm already looking forward to next month's lunch!

Little Sprouts

Kids Classes:  Thursday mornings in April are all about the kids! We've had 2 awesome classes and are looking forward to 2 more fun-filled Thursdays.  The kids have planted peas, sprouting nicely at last check, and this week we filled a few beds with kale, sprouting broccoli, chard and lettuce.  The kids also had a chance to explore the farm and found the transplanter down in the far corner Little Sprouts of the farm at The Highlands. Undaunted, these mini-mights ran to the transplanter for a closer look.  Ray and Lauren were making a few repairs. We chatted with them for a few minutes and all had chance to check out how the transplanter works. We also looked inside an empty beehive, painted a clay pot and popped a seedling into it for a great take-away!  Wanna join us?  Register on the Classes for Children page on our website -  www.pennypackfarm.org.

Johnny's Selected Seeds Makes an Award:  Johnny's selected our recent application to its Charitable Giving program!  I am psyched about the award!  I requested several tools, seeds and plants and boy did they come through!  We are getting broadforks (to turn the beds with minimal disturbance), a compost thermometer, several buckets, asparagus crowns (green and purple) and a nice batch of seeds for the EC.  Our order should be arriving in the next week or so and we'll put everything to good use.  If you've never used a broadfork, please stop by The Highlands EC and give it try - you'll want one for yourself after a few short turns!

Have a good week.
