GMO OMG

GMO OMG director and concerned father Jeremy Seifert is in search of answers. How do GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, and our freedom of choice? And perhaps the ultimate question, which Seifert tests himself: is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can't gain back? These and other questions take Seifert on a journey from his family's table to Haiti, Paris, Norway, and the lobby of agra-giant Monsanto, from which he is unceremoniously ejected. Along the way we gain insight into a question that is of growing concern to citizens the world over: what's on your plate?

Our expenses are high right now... and our seedlings are in the greenhouse.

There are still openings at both farms

 The Horsham Site Application

By rejoining you will be:

  • getting fresh, organically grown food for your family
  • supporting a farm that pays living wages and benefits to their farmers
  • enhancing environmental health
  • gives you a chance to visit the farm

Will the CSA shares be the same at both sites?

Both 6 and 10 unit shares will be available at both sites. Berry production will be good at both sites! Lots were planted!  The share contents will be similar at both sites, but not an exact match. Some crops might be more abundant and some in smaller quantities.

Will there be an Edible Classroom for the kids at both sites?

Yes, Diane and the interns will be in the edible classroom at both sites on a schedule TBD.

For your choice of location and pickup days: please do not delay.

Katie Fotta Looking Forward to Spring

by Farmer Katie Fotta, Highlands Farm Manager

As I write this there is still snow in some of the fields, but hopefully for not much longer.  While most of the vegetables that we keep in the ground can survive an ordinary winter, this past one was anything but.  With this latest warm weather, we got a chance to check on some of our overwintering crops that have been buried in snow for months.  I am thrilled to report that our field spinach, garlic, scallions, leeks, carrots, parsnips, and strawberries have all survived.  Most of these crops were protected only by row cover, and some of them braved the winter weather with no additional help from us.

We didn't come out of this winter completely unscathed.  Our leafy crops, kale, collards, and chard, did not survive the cold blast in early January, which blew their plastic cover off and exposed them to single digit temperatures.  These now empty beds are allowing for a slight change in plans.  We'll be transplanting new kale, lettuce, and bok choy in these beds as early as next week.  We are also experimenting with some earlier plantings of some favorite spring vegetables.  With such a challenging winter behind us, I am looking forward to a new season, a great crew, and delicious spring veggies.

On Saturday, April 12, PFEC's farmers and board members will be walking to put an end to hunger in the Philadelphia region by walking
in the Stroehmann's Walk+Run Against Hunger.
Please help us! Here's what you can do:

Walk for Hunger 2013

All proceeds raised by Team Pennypack come back to the farm to support our own efforts to provide local, organic, non-processed food to low income families through subsidized shares. Last year funds raised through the event supported 12 families with food directly from Pennypack Farm.

You'll be hearing more about the walk in the coming weeks. However, if you would like to walk with the farm team, please tell us and we'll help you get started. Contact Kristy at nativeplantfamily@comcast.net.

Diane Diffenderfer Notes from the Edible Classroom

by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

Another week of unsettled weather.  One day the thermometer was just shy of 60 and the next day the wind chill was 2.  It's tough to grow and harvest veggies when the temp swings are so great.

Seedling Update: Just about everything we grow on the farms we start from seed and the first round of seeding started in early February. Those seedlings are now being hardened off; next stop is the field. Hardening off is a process in which the tender seedlings are acclimated to outside temperatures.  The farmers move trays and trays of seedlings outside to a protected area. During the day and weather permitting, the seedlings are uncovered and exposed to the cooler temps and bright sunlight.  In the evenings the plants are covered or even brought inside if it's too cold.  After a few weeks, the plants are sturdy enough to be transplanted into the fields.

Community Service Community Service at the Farm: Each year, many groups (kids & adults) come to the farms and offer their time and talents.  Depending upon the time of year, community service projects range from weeding, to mulching, to pruning or moving row covers.  Last Sunday, I had a group of 11, 8th graders help clean up the Horsham EC.  The kids were terrific!  After a short tour of the farm, they removed dead Jerusalem artichoke and sunflower stalks, pruned mint and Chinese chives and mulched the cleaned beds and blueberries.  They also moved several wheelbarrow loads of grapevines to the hedgerow.  If you know a group who would like to visit either farm and lend a hand, please let me know.  We are always happy to have extra hands - it's amazing how much a small group can accomplish in just a few hours.

Proscope Worms Education Update:  In earlier Notes, I asked for volunteers to help with our large groups.  Several folks expressed interest and last week we had our first training session.  One of the volunteers, who happens to be teacher, brought a Proscope owned by her school. A Proscope is a handheld microscope that attaches to a laptop or tablet for easy viewing.  Here's a link if you're interested in the Proscope  We used the Proscope to get a better look at who is roaming the worm bin!  Very cool and I think the kids are going to love it!

Quick note on upcoming programs:  Classes for the little kids - every Thursday morning at The Highlands in April; Classes for adults - Knife Skills in March, Herb & Pesto Night in April and Cooking the CSA Way in May!  Check the Website for details!

Have a good week.
