December
Horsham Update

Devin Barto by Farmer Devin,
Horsham Farm Mgr

December has been a cold month thus far. I was looking at last year's weather data to compare this December to last December, and there were a lot more 60 degree days in December 2012. It also has snowed a lot more this year. Watching the snow fall at the farm was very nice but makes harvest challenging. We have to dig all the snow off the tunnels in the morning to be able to pull the plastic off when the plants have thawed. I have been impressed by the Tango Lettuce which is in a low tunnel. It is really doing a good job with the cold overnight temperatures.

December has been a productive month for us. We wrapped up the crop plan for 2014, in process of finishing up the seed order, and doing maintenance on all the tractors and equipment. All the while, harvesting and cultivating for the winter CSA

We are looking forward to an exciting 2014 summer season, but enjoying the slower pace of the winter!

2013: Year in Review

by Heather Hahn Sullivan, PFEC Board President 2014

The Highlands
The Highlands

With the opening of a new farm at The Highlands, Pennypack Farm & Education Center entered a new chapter in 2013!  The two Pennypack Farms - Horsham and The Highlands - each had a full roster of CSA members.  Each week, rain or shine (and even more rain!), you came to pick up your fresh, local, organically-grown produce. We now serve more than 500 member families, and the new farm at The Highlands has also allowed us to expand our educational activities (more than 4,700 people served) and increase our donations to local food banks (more than 5,000 pounds).

We started our farm manager apprentice program, which helps to educate young farmers on the many aspects of farming and farm management. We held our first Farm-to-Table fundraising dinner, all prepared by local chefs and farm friends to rave reviews. From the quinoa-stuffed heirloom tomatoes to roasted beet pannacotta, it was a meal to remember!

Susan Curry

At the 10th Anniversary Localicious event held in September, we honored farm founder Susan Curry as both our Sustainable Living Leader and Volunteer of the Year. More than 175 people attended the celebration, and helped to raise more than $20,000.  We met our challenge grant from the Arcadia Foundation and received an in-kind grant from IKEA, which helped to furnish our new offices and apprentice housing.

2013 was a busy and successful, and we have big plans for the coming year: putting in the Edible Classroom at The Highlands, expanding education programs, planting more berries (be sure to get your berry gifts!), and more! Thank you for your support throughout the last year, and we look forward to another wonderful year!

Pennypack Farm Begins 2014 with New Board Members & a New Slate of Officers

The farm's Board of Directors is pleased to welcome three new board members Kim Reese, Michele LaRocca and Rosanna Tedesco.

Kim Reese has been an active member of the farm's CSA for 2 years. She teaches mathematics at Pennridge High School. Kim is interested in helping the farm develop our on-farm education programs.

Michele LaRocca is a Wells Fargo advisor in Philadelphia. This year, Michele volunteered to help organize the Localicious dinner. She is looking forward to increasing the farm's presence in our community through events and education programs.

Rosanna Tedesco works at GlaxoSmithKline and is a chemist by training. Rosanna is committed to helping kids learn about sustainable agriculture and healthy eating habits.

At our December board meeting a new slate of officers was approved. Beginning in January they will be as follows:

Heather Hahn Sullivan - President

Karen Fread - Vice President

Brian Nardini - Vice President

Ron Frame - Treasurer

Mary Tobkin - Secretary

Heather Hahn Sullivan has been a board member since 2011 and Vice President since 2012. She is an experienced event planner and fundraiser. Heather has a thorough understanding of nonprofits and will help the farm strategically plan for the future of the organization.

We'd like to thank Anthony Spangler for his leadership as president since 2012. He has fulfilled his term in the position but will remain on the board.

The board would like to offer our gratitude to Patrick Druhan for more than 10 years of service on the board. Pat has been on the Board of Directors since the organization's inception. We will miss you at the table!

The success of Pennypack Farm depends upon people passionate about the organization. If you are enthusiastic about our organization, consider getting involved as a volunteer! Just see any staff or board member to find out how!

Diane Diffenderfer Notes from the Edible Classroom

by Diane Diffenderfer, Education Director

The year in review.  We each have our own way of recapping the year; family photos,

Archeology Lesson

New Year's resolutions met or not, vacations taken, community service projectstackled, kids' and pets' heights recorded on the door jamb... Our farmers may take stock of the year in terms of seeding dates, spring weather, machinery health, crop yields, insect and weed pressure, summer temps and conversations during weekly share pick ups.  On the education side, my year in review consists of recalling kids building lasagna beds, share members volunteering their time to lend a hand with some of our large groups, campers receiving an impromptu lesson in archeology, harvesting potatoes, making bean salad and salsa and watching campers run through The Highlands flower beds with insect nets held high!  We had a great 2013 and I'm looking forward to creating more memories in 2014!

Winter Carrots The winter share is cruising along.  As a work share, I get to enjoy early, wintery mornings at The Highlands.  My share duty last week was that perfect blend of activity.  I arrived early; swept out the refrigerator truck and zipped down the driveway in the pick-up to retrieve carrots, Napa cabbage, turnips, potatoes and kale from the root cellar and cold storage room.  After transferring all the veggies to the refrigerator truck, I headed to the basement of the gardener's cottage to gather hoses and helped to set up the winter wash station in the greenhouse.  During my work share, I was reminded once again of our farmers' care and attention to storing the veggies properly.  Moisture and temperature are key components in maintaining the vegetables in prime condition - some like it dry, others like it moist - no one likes it hot!

PFEC at the Movies

Looking ahead, Traci Updahl will host a Bean Soup & Beans class on Tuesday, January 14, (register here) and the farm's annual Sustainable Movie Series selections are being finalized.  Ambler Theater will once again host the event and films will be shown on February 11, March 11 and April 8.  In addition, "Wildman" Steve Brill will return for 3 foraging walks at Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust.  All in all, much to be thankful for and much to look forward to.  Thanks for being a friend to the farm and have a safe and happy New Year.
