New Hoophouse in Horsham for Winter Production

Farmer Andy by Farmer Andy, Farming Director

You may have noticed that we are in the process of erecting a new hoophouse in Horsham, right next to our large moveable hoophouse.  We have found that in this business, you can never have too many hoophouses!  So much of our growing season is during times of year when having that layer of plastic insulation really helps extend our season and make crops more available during the colder months.  I have noticed over the years that many people think our season ends in September or October and are surprised to hear that we grow vegetables year round.  In fact, I think the fall to winter season is the best, both in terms of the vegetables grown and the work.  All of those delicious greens, and the frost sweetened kale, broccoli, collards and cabbage plus all the root crops - carrots, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas - are at their peak flavor.  Sign up for a winter share to experience this for yourself!

Funding for this project is from a  grant from the Cultivating Communities Campaign (CCC), a collaborative initiative led by Health Promotion Council, in partnership with Montgomery County Health Department, Penn State University Cooperative Extension in Montgomery County,  The Food Trust and the North Penn Community Health Foundation.

In exchange, we will be donating 25 percent of the food produced in this new hoophouse to food pantries in the North Penn area.  This is a really great and exciting way to positively influence the local food system!
