Update from the Highlands Katie Fotta

by Farmer Katie

Throughout the winter months, we have been preparing the Highlands site for our first growing season. Some of you may have joined us in December for our two workdays, when we cleaned out the lower level of the barn, the greenhouse, the potting shed, and the springhouse. We've met with contractors to install a heater in the greenhouse, spoke with PECO about getting electric to our well site, and plotted out a proposed perimeter for the deer fence. Anyone who walked the fields in the first week of February may have noticed that we applied our first soil amendments to the field.

In the coming weeks, if conditions and equipment allows, we will continue to work the fields. Initially, we'll do a few passes with Highlands mowing fields the disk to allow the applied nutrients to work into the soil. In early March, the fields will be plowed, using a moldboard plow. This will physically turn the top layer of the soil to breakdown the sod layer. We will then continue with our bed prep, with another round of disking, rototilling, and another application of nutrients.   By early April, the ground should be ready for our first plantings.

With the greenhouse still unheated, we're renting space from Meadowbrook Farm in Jenkintown. A whole day was spent there starting the first seeds for the Highlands. This seeding included kale, broccoli, collard greens, celery, celeriac, fennel, chard, and parsley. By the beginning of March, the greenhouse at the Highlands should be ready for our seedlings.

This is an exciting time of year in farming. The field plans are getting the final touches. Seedlings in the greenhouse are poking through the soil. On a sunny afternoon in the mid-forties, there is a sense of endless potential and like spring is coming any day.

Committee Volunteers Needed

Calling People who Like Parties!

Events Committee Meeting - Tuesday, February 19, 7pm
at Upper Dublin Township Building
Are you a social butterfly?  Do you love organizing fun events with yummy food?  Most of all, do you love the farm?  We need you to help coordinate events!  Pennypack Farm's annual fundraiser, Localicious, is getting a new look this year, and we want to plan some other fun events as well.  With our new farm at the Highlands, we have lots of opportunities!

Come to the meeting to help brainstorm, or volunteer to help plan an event in 2013.  From potlucks to Localicious, silent auctions to family events, we want your opinions and ideas, not to mention your assistance in planning!  All events support the farm in some way: raising money, building community among members, or introducing new people to the farm.

We will need help with many different tasks, and we'll be sure to find something to suit your interests and timeframe, big or small.  Some ideas: graphic design, working on e-vites or mailing lists, seeking auction donations, making phone calls, or just spreading the word.  If you can't make the meeting but still want to help, please email Heather Hahn Sullivan at heatherhahnsullivan@gmail.com.  The meeting will be held at the Upper Dublin Township Building, 801 Loch Alsh Avenue, Fort Washington.

Here's to a great year of fun at the farm!

Calling TEACHERS, EDUCATORS, and THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN!

Pennypack Farm is expanding its education programs to The Highlands Mansion & Gardens! Beginning this spring PFEC will be offering on-farm classes for schools and other groups at our new location. Sound exciting? It is!

The Education Committee has a unique opportunity to support curriculum development and community outreach.  We are looking for people who:

  • would like to help develop programs,
  • can help us foster relationships with local teachers & schools,
  • are ready to inspire children and adults through hands-on lessons

It's easy to get involved:

Notes from the Edible Classroom

by Diane
Seedling trays
The first seeds have sprouted and the Horsham greenhouse is filled with tray after tray of seeds bursting at their little seams!  Seed orders have been rolling in and the farmers have been working every day, getting ready for the 2013 season.  It's not too late to re-up for your CSA share! Regular and work shares are available at both the Horsham site and The Highlands.

A quick word about farm nomenclature - since we are now operating at 2 sites (yea!!), we will distinguish the sites as: Horsham (our first farm located on Mann Road) and The Highlands (our second site located in Ft. Washington at 7001 Sheaff Lane).

Since this is my first Spring with PFEC, I wanted to understand how the farmers prepare for the season. The winter months are anything but idle.  In addition to taking care of the Winter Share crops, the summer share crops are selected and orders are placed for seeds, potting soil components (more about this in a moment) and tools/equipment.  In addition to restocking farm-related inventories, repairs are made to hoop houses and equipment.

Back to those sprouting seeds - one of the most important aspects of seeding is to place the seeds in the  soil optimum growing medium.  At Pennypack, the farmers follow a time-tested recipe, based on Chapter 14 of Eliot Coleman's book The New Organic Grower, for mixing the seed-starting mix.  The recipe is tacked up inside the greenhouse.  According to Farmer Jess, one change to the posted recipe is that coir has replaced peat moss.  Coir is shredded coconut husks - at the farm, we purchase compressed blocks of coir, hydrate them in tubs of water, then spread it to dry before adding it to the mix.

Most of the materials used in the seedling mix are familiar; however, one interesting component is green sand.  When I opened the metal trash can containing the green sand, I was immediately reminded of the material provided at golf courses for fixing divots!  At the golf course, it's a mixture of fertilizer and grass seed, at the farm green sand is used as a source of potash and to enhance water retention of the soil mixture.

Once the seeding mixture is prepared, it's spread into the seed trays and the seeding begins!  Next time you find yourself at the farm and it's still light, ask if you can go inside the greenhouse and see the seeding operation.  It's pretty cool and definitely worth the ask!

A quick note about the Edible Classroom at The Highlands.  Plans are well underway for the new EC and we couldn't be more excited!  Look for a drawing the next Pickings.  I am actively looking for groups interested in farm-based educational programs, so if you know of a school group, camp, or just a group of interested kids, please let them know we'd be happy to have them visit at The Highlands and ask them to drop me an email at education@pennypackfarm.org.  Thanks!
