Highlands Open House

Last Sunday over 170 CSA current and waitlist members came for a tour of The Highlands. Highlights included a tour of the mansion with a discussion about the history of farming on the property by Meg Bleecker-Blades, Executive Director of HHS, a walk through the formal gardens and look at the historic greenhouse that will soon house Pennypack seedlings, and a walk through the fields with Farmer Andy. Take a look at the pictures on the left.

Could not make it for the Open House?
The Highlands grounds are open from 10am to dusk daily. You can drive up and take a walking tour.

We will repeat the Open House in the spring.

PFEC Serves the Community

Loaves & Fishes
Pennypack Farm & Education Center plays a key role in the success  of Loaves and Fishes food pantry at Jenkintown United Methodist Church, which serves 80-100 families per week.   Starting the end of May until mid-November, Loaves and Fishes benefits weekly from over a dozen different fresh, organic vegetables that are delivered to our site.  The vegetables, which reflect 100% of our fresh vegetable supply, are a key component of the food pantry's food that is distributed every Thursday.  Families look forward to seeing what Pennypack Farm is giving us each week.  Some people stay with the vegetables that they are familiar with while others are taking vegetables that are unknown to them or too expensive to buy.  We have enjoyed talking about how to cook the vegetables they have never had and have been sharing recipes.  They come back the following week telling us how delicious the recipe was and how they might add or subtract an ingredient to enhance the flavor.

Farewell from Farmer Dennis

I just wanted to take this moment to thank all of the Pennypack community for their support to me personally, the farm staff and this organization. We can't do it without you and I doubt it's ever voiced enough. I regret to inform you all that I will not be coming back next year to be part of the farm staff. My wife and I are buying property to hopefully start our own farming enterprises. We're hopefully closing on a small farm at the end of the month.

This is an exciting time for PFEC, with the new expansion to the Highlands, and I will be sorry not to be a part of growing a new farm there. Still I've given years of service to this organization and am confident and proud that in some small ways I have had a hand in bringing this fine organization to such a place where the move to the Highlands is possible.

I will miss you all and if I didn't find the time or opportunity to say so personally, please forgive me. If you are so inclined to stay in touch, I can be reached at (215) 280-3456 or dennisreil@yahoo.com.  Thanks for all the memories. It's been a wonderful, long, strange trip indeed.
