Volunteer Opportunity
Have you always dreamed of being a Movie Mogul?
Of making a difference in your community?
Of spreading the message of sustainability?
Now is your chance!
Pennypack Farm is looking for someone to take the lead in producing the Sustainability Movie Series. Will you be a part of it and help to make this year the most successful yet? Held the second Tuesday of February, March and April at the Ambler Theater, this popular event is going into its 4th year and has been growing in attendance each year.
The goal of the series is to reach out to the wider community and teach people ways they can change what they are doing to live a more sustainable life. In the past, we've shown movies about plastic consumption, electronic e-waste, over fishing, school lunch programs, home pesticide use, and of course, healthier food systems. If you would like to learn more about this volunteer opportunity please contact Trina.

Thinking About Next Year?
It is getting to the end of the regular CSA season.
The last pickups for the 2012 are the week of November 5th. What about the 2013 CSA season? Typically we send out applications the last week of October. This year they will be sent out 1-2 weeks later as we finalize some new plans. What you need to know: - The prices and share sizes will not change. Six-unit shares will be $515 and 10 unit shares will be $755. There will be an additional bookkeeping cost for splitting shares. Deposits will remain at $200 with final payments due April 1. Payment plans can be arranged.
- Current members will have 2-3 weeks to purchase shares before we send applications to families on the waitlist.
- Waitlist families: there will be more shares... stay tuned!

Notes from the Edible Classroom
What a difference a day makes. Last Sunday I stopped by the EC to check on things because it was pretty cold Saturday night. Sure enough, many plants looked pretty sad - the results of a killing frost. I ripped out all the tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and cucumbers and composted what I could. I planted field peas where the cherry tomatoes spent the summer and mulched with some leftover hay. Hopefully the peas will germinate and get some growth before the temperature dips too low. For all you seed savers, please stop by the EC and get a few chinese chive seed heads! During the summer, the flowering chives were routinely covered with pollinators. Now, even with the flowers gone, a few honey bees cling to the seed pods. The small, papery, multi-lobed seed pods have just started to open and the tiny black seeds will soon fall to the ground if not collected. I'll remove the seed heads this week and store them in brown paper bags for future use. If you would like some seeds for your garden, they're free for the asking! Here's a nice link with not only a great recipe using Chinese Chives, but also a pretty nice photo of the resulting dish. Made me hungry...I've had several people ask me, "How big is the EC?" I don't know, so on Friday I retrieved the farm's giant tape measure (it's actually called an open reel measuring tape and for you tool folks, click for a quick view). Luckily, a few young CSA members came by just in time to help me measure. We learned the EC is 117 ft long and 57 feet wide, or 6,669 square feet. So we know the dimensions, but 117' x 57' isn't really a meaningful answer and neither is 6,669 square feet. I need to think of it in terms of something familiar. How about an acre? An acre equals 43, 560 sq. ft., so the EC is a tad bigger than a tenth of an acre. Okay, I can sort of grasp the size of an acre, but I am am a visual learner, and this image helped me put all these measurements in perspective. Thanks to the kids who helped measure not only the EC, but the pond, the grape arbor, the front gate and the height of the fence. I'm planning to wrap the fig trees this week. Feel free to stop in and lend a hand, or just see how it's going!Diane
