Worship Fertilizer from Dave Helmuth and Ad Lib Music

"Why do you repeat stuff over and over and over? I don't like 7-11 worship!"

Ever heard that? The song One Thing Remains has received criticism over being too repetitive. Here's what I think is happening.

Repetition

We're handing out truth-shotguns to open fire on the lie-vultures that have attacked us all week. And every repetition is another round of ammunition!

We hear:

You don't have what it takes.

No one really cares about you.

Fend for yourself...God's not helping you.

What if this happens? What if that happens?

Shark attack! ISIS! Planned Parenthood! Global Warming! Racism!

--

--

What if I get fired?

I think I'm sick. Am I dying?

I'll never get out of debt.

My marriage is over.

Our church is fighting against itself

--

--

I can't talk to my parents.

I'm not thin enough.

I can't afford cool clothes.

I'm no good at sports.

I don't have any friends.

--

--

We need to sing this over and over and over until nothing is circling overhead and we're lost in His perfect love.*

First John, four verse eighteen. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

*but let's lead this well, right? Don't just get up there and repeat stuff ad nauseum. Give people context. Help them understand why repetition is good, I mean, have you ever read Psalm 136 and wondered..."26 times...why in the world?!" Sometimes it's helpful to just say this out loud: "I usually don't really 'get it' until I've repeated it past the point of 'again, really?' because that's when I let down my guard and can actually feel the truth transforming me." But by all means, please lead us in repetition!
