I'm amazed at the amount of ambiguity that many leaders allow themselves to work in. Frustration flourishes when we (and those we serve with) have different expectations. We need to know what's required of us. Really. The idea of "boundaries" is simply knowing where you end and others begin.
So first find out:
|
What am I responsible for?
- Leading worship? How many times a month?
- Developing other leaders? Who and how many?
- Lead the entire worship ministry/department? Set the vision, create the culture, maintain standards?
- Create the visuals?
- Design and plan the service elements?
- Oversee the tech arts ministry/department?
- Disciple the congregation in worship?
- Scheduling players, singers, and techs?
- Other specific "staff" tasks?
What's a win?
- Full bands and tech teams?
- A singing congregation?
- Thematic support of each message?
- Culturally relevant art and media?
- The felt presence of God?
- A 58-minute service?
- The development of the maximum number of team members?
- Everyone up front is smiling?
- Fantastic music?
Take the time, energy, and (possibly uncomfortable) pains to get lots and lots of clarity on exactly where your role begins and where it ends. Then get after leading with compassion. Have an aim and a practice of developing, shepherding, and discipling those entrusted to your care. With clarity and all your heart!
