Political Signs

Bartonville Code of Ordinances-Political Signs, Section 3.404 (l), Sec. 3.404 General Regulations

(l) Political Signs. Political signs may be erected in all areas, provided such signs comply with the following:

  • Signs shall not be placed within the public right-of-way.
  • Signs shall not obstruct view from traffic.
  • The area of the sign shall not exceed thirty-six (36) square feet per sign face.
  • The maximum height of a political sign shall not exceed eight (8) feet in height.
  • Signs may not be located in a public easement or on property owned by the town.
  • Signs shall be removed seventy-two (72) hours after the related election date.
  • Illuminated signs or signs with moving elements are prohibited.

With respect to the Town's right-of-ways, generally, because so many of our properties in town are not platted the right-of-way becomes prescriptive in nature.  Traditionally we consider the  right-of-way to be either 25' from the center of the road or the back slope of the bar ditch to the road.

Please be respectful to the democratic process.  Regardless of how someone feels about a candidate, the election process or the signs themselves, removing them for any purpose without permission is against the law. If caught vandalizing or stealing a sign, you could be charged with criminal mischief and could end up paying up to $500 in fines.
