Become a master of DSLR photography in this advanced and highly interactive class. We'll explore the aspects of lenses, filters, external flash units, controlling natural light, reflectors, close-up photography, action/sports shooting and low light and night shooting, which includes photographing
the moon correctly. Some activities will take place outside normal class schedule. Age 16+ Prerequisite: Level 1 and 2 of DSLR classes or permission of the class instructor.

PEN, BRUSH AND INK WITH WATERCOLOR AND PASTEL
Explore the possibilities of using pen and ink in conjunction with watercolor and soft pastels. This is a traditional mixed media approach. You will be presented with examples of works by different artists of the Western and Eastern tradition as well as a demonstration of the media at the beginning of each class period. HOW TO FIRE - FUSING AT HOME - NEW

This class will discuss the technical concerns associated with firing fused glass and how to determine what options best suit the different types of firing for system 96 glass. You will create several small pieces for each specific type of firing. Through taking notes, observing and discussing results -- and asking questions -- you will gain an understanding of how to fire successfully. The goal isn't to create a large number of pieces. CityArts' ArtCore classes give youth ages 6-16 (unless otherwise noted) a core knowledge about art as they make new friends and have fun!

  • Students staying for the whole day will need to bring a sack lunch.  
ARTCORE: CRAYON MELTDOWN
Students will help instructors melt down lots of old crayons and then create different pieces of artwork with the melted wax. Please wear old clothes because this is GUARANTEED to get very messy!

ARTCORE: OPTICAL ART
The art of optical illusions is one of the most impressive forms, in our opinion. Students will learn to manipulate the paper to make it look like it's jumping off the page with the help of some 3D glasses, and lessons inspired by M.C. Escher.

ARTCORE: RECYCLED SCULPTURE
In this workshop, we will discuss the artist Vik Muniz. He made a name for himself by using old materials to create fine art, and the results are breathtaking. Students will make a statement piece of their own, after a discussion about waste disposal and sustainability
in our world.

ARTCORE: DIGITAL DISTORTION
Students will begin this lesson by choosing from a variety of provided photographs. They will then alter, distort, and manipulate the images into a creative art work of their very own, while learning the ins and outs of photoshop. Ages 10-16

ARTCORE: VAN GOGH COLLAGE
Using Van Gogh's painting "Bedroom in Arles" for reference, students will take a pop culture approach to this art piece by filling a collaged "bedroom" with their own unique interests and personalities. CityArts has boxes of magazines to cut from, but for a personal touch, please bring family photos that can be cut up!

ARTCORE: FACE AND BODY PAINTING
Paint is for more than just a canvas. In this workshop, students will get the chance to grow wings, age by 50 years, morph into a zombie, robot, animal, and anything else they can imagine. Please have students wear old clothes, as they will be leaving looking much different than when they arrived! Costumes encouraged but not required!

ARTCORE: STEP-BY-STEP DRAWING
(For Beginners and Advanced draftsmen)
Take it from Leonardo Da Vinci, the easiest way to learn about drawing tough subjects is to use a step-by-step learning method that involves recognizing the underlying shapes in what you're trying to draw. Please wear old clothes, as our medium for the class will be oil pastels.

It may surprise most, but there is an astonishing amount of scientific study that is involved in art-making. With a focus on physics, we will create "pendulum paintings" with the students.

With a main focus on Egyptian art, we will delve into history creating ornate pharaoh headdresses, and vases to take home. We'll also talk about hieroglyphics, and the importance of art throughout history!

This tried and true art form is one of the oldest known in our history. Why? Because it's so durable, it lasts through the ages! Students will learn to cut glass and grout a mosaic that will last them a lifetime.
