CityArts: Holiday Gift Destination
What do I give the person who has everything? Where can I find gifts made by local artists? Is there anything for my children to do over the winter break? CityArts has all the answers to your holiday questions.
  • For the people who have everything, why not give them a gift certificate for an art class at CityArts? Winter art classes start in January. Stop by the CityArts front desk to purchase a gift certificate for a certain amount or sign up your family member or friend for a class.
  • No gift is more unique than the one you make yourself. Sign up now for one of our Holiday Workshops in December. You'll have fun putting your own personal touches on holiday ornaments, Santa-themed decorations, jewelry and more. Register online at WichitaTIX.com or call (316) 350-3245.

  • The CityArts Boutique is the place to find unique artwork and gifts made by local and regional artists. It is jam-packed with photography, paintings, blown glass and decorative pieces made by more than 35 local and regional artists, many of whom teach art classes at CityArts. The majority of items are between $15 and $50. Boutique hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

  • CityArts' Winter Break Camps (click on the link and go to page 7 of the brochure) are the perfect solution for parents looking for positive and engaging activities for their children after the holidays. Add Museum To Holiday Outings

The Mid-America All-Indian Center Museum is currently home to three exhibits that showcase the diversity of the Museum's collection. It is the perfect place to bring friends and family who are in town for the holidays. The Museum is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Now on display:

  • "Tsate Kongia: Walking in Two Worlds, the Life of Blackbear Bosin" (permanent display)
The exhibit gives an in-depth look into the personal and professional life of Blackbear Bosin, one of the founders of the Indian Center and the man behind Wichita's iconic Keeper of the Plains sculpture.
  • "From Native Hands: A Journey Through Childhood" (through Jan. 4)
The exhibit takes visitors back to a time before action figures and video games when toys were stitched by hand and created to tell cultural stories.
  • "Walk A Mile in Our Moccasins" (through Jan. 4) The exhibit celebrates the artistry of footwear from tribes throughout the Plains and Northwest. It includes pieces from the Indian Center's moccasin collection circa 1880 to mid-1900s.

Click here for more more information about the exhibits and admission prices.

On Sale In The Gift Shop

The Indian Center Gift Shop is the only place to find a full-length film about Blackbear Bosin. "Tsate Kongia: Walking in Two Worlds, The Story of Blackbear Bosin" is a companion film to the Museum exhbit of the same name. It is available for $29.95. You can buy the two-disc box set in person at the Gift Shop or order by phone at (316) 350-3342.

The film was commissioned by The Indian Center. It features rare film footage of Bosin, audio recordings taken a month before his death and interviews with friends and co-workers.

Make Your Own Dream Catcher

Reserve your seat now for the Indian Center's "Beginning Dream Catcher Making Workshop" from 1-3 p.m on Saturday, Dec. 14. It will be taught by local artist Michelle Conine. Registration is $10 for Museum members and the general public. Call 316-350-3340 for more details.

The dream catcher has been part of the American Indian culture for generations. Dream catchers hang above beds to protect people from negative dreams. Dream catchers only allow good dreams to filter through, sliding down the feathers to the sleeper. Bad dreams stay in the net and disappear with the morning light.
