44th Annual Art Awards This Thursday 
  
Thirteen Wichita individuals, cultural organizations and businesses will be recognized for their work to further the growth and development of arts in the Wichita area during the 44th annual Art Awards Dinner, sponsored by The Arts Council. The event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview, 400 W. Douglas. A complete list of award winners is included below.

The festivities will begin with a reception at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will follow. Tickets are $50 per person or $450 for a reserved table of 10. Buy your tickets now before time runs out at WichitaTIX.com  or by calling (316) 303-8100.

2013 Art Awards recipients are:
  • Individual Artist Award: Curt Clonts
    Given to an artist actively working in such categories as choreography, music composition, film/video, theatre, interdisciplinary/ performance art, two-dimensional visual art and/or three-dimensional visual art, who has shown outstanding achievement.
  • Arts Advocate/Individual Award: Joan Cole
    Given to an individual or couple dedicated to furthering the cause of an art form or the arts in general through promotional, volunteer, administrative, legislative or professional efforts.
  • Arts Advocate/Group Award: St. James Episcopal Church
    An organization dedicated to furthering the cause of an art form or the arts in general through promotional, volunteer, administrative, legislative or professional efforts.
  • Arts Educator: Aimee Geist
    Given to an individual who has devoted a career to teaching the arts in an educational environment.
  • Arts Organization Award: Friends of the Wichita Art Museum
    Given to a public, not-for-profit organization that presents or provides arts opportunities to the Wichita community and region.
  • Burton Pell Award: Julianne McLean
    An award created in memory of Mr. Burton Pell, a longtime member and past president of The Arts Council.  Given to an outstanding individual in music.
  • Special Recognition Award/Individual: Babs Mellor
    Given to an individual who has shown outstanding achievement and development in the arts.
  • Special Recognition Award/Organization: Theater League for  "Disney's The Lion King"
    Given to an organization that has shown outstanding achievement and development in the arts.
  • Special Project: Exploration Place for "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination." exhibit
    Given to a neighborhood, business, corporation or group that has provided support for a single event or project.
  • Business Award: Bluebird ArtHouse, Emily Brookover
    Given to a business or foundation providing broad-based and continued support of the arts through its operation or other foundation funds.
  • Youth Recognition Award: Daniel Debolt
    Given to a high school and/or middle school student who has shown outstanding achievement and development in the arts.
  • Chris Cherches Award: MKEC, Ken Bengtson,  for Lincoln Street Bridge and Dam Project  
    An award presented by the Design Council to honor excellence in public art. The award is in honor of Chris Cherches, Wichita's city manager for 18 years, who was a strong advocate for the arts in this community. 
  • Gordon W. Evans Award: Chris Shank
    Given to a patron demonstrating outstanding leadership and special support for the arts. This award is presented at the discretion of The Arts Council.

The Arts Council was officially designated by City of Wichita in 1999 to serve as the focal point for coordinating and promoting the visibility of all cultural arts in the community.
