Wichita Flight Festival Poster Design To Be Unveiled July 15      
 
The public will get its first look at the official 2013 Wichita Flight Festival poster design at noon on Monday, July 15 at the National Center for Aviation Training, 4004 N. Webb Road. Everyone is welcome to attend the unveiling. Lunch will be for sale in the commons area.

The theme of the contest was "Air Capital of the World." 
A $1,000 award will be given to the winning artist, $500 to the second-place artist and $250 to the third.  
   
The Wichita Flight Festival will take place Sept. 28-29 at Jabara Airport. Air acts from around the country are scheduled to perform. All daytime activities are free and open to the public. Tickets for the Saturday Night Twilight Air show & Concert is $10 and are on sale now at Wichita.TIX.com

The Saturday Night Twilight Air Show & Concert will be headlined by Tora, Tora, Tora in the air and Hotel California - The Original Eagles Tribute Band on the ground.

Enroll in This Week's Art Classes     
This week kicks off a new round of summer art classes at CityArts. Fifteen new classes are offered today through Saturday. They are all listed on our calendar. You may register by phone at (316) 350-3245 or at the front desk through the start time of each class. Here are some of your options:
  • Mondays starting today, July 8: Teen Anime (four weeks), 6:30 p.m., $45
  • Tuesdays starting July 9: Youth Improv (four weeks), 5:30 p.m., $45
  • Tuesday, July 9: Textile Art One-Day Workshop, 5-7 p.m., $15
  • Thursdays starting July 11: Photoshop Elements (three weeks), 11 a.m., $35
  • Saturdays startting July 13: The Art of Sewing (four weeks), 1 p.m., $6

Call for Artists      

Entries are being accepted through Sept. 27 for the annual Arts Council Juried Exhibit at CityArts. All two- and three-dimensional pieces created in any media since 2010 are eligible for consideration. The show is open to artists ages 18 and older, and all work must be original. New Lunchtime Lecture Series    

CityArts is proud to announce the launch of the First Friday Art Exploration Lecture Series. Once a month, spend your lunch break at CityArts with other art enthusiasts to get creative inspiration from area artists and CityArts instructors. Don't forget to BYOL (bring your own lunch).  

  

We hope to see you at CityArts for the first lecture: 

  • Friday, Sept. 6: Introducing Art to Youth,
    12:15-1 p.m., includes a quick, fun make-it-and-take-it project. Presented by CityArts Youth Education Director Liz Shenk.

American Indian Festival is Here  

There are only a few short days until the start of the 3rd Annual American Indian Festival, July 13-14 at Century II Expo Hall. This powerful event connects visitors to Wichita's American Indian past and future. Doors open at 10 a.m. both days.  

 

Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for youth (under 6 get in free). It's inexpensive fun for the entire family. The festival includes:

  • A Contest Powwow
  • Indian Fine Art Market
  • Interactive children's activities
  • Visits by Old Cowtown Museum's Percheron horses, Kneehigh the miniature horse and birds from the Eagle Valley Raptor Center.
  • Food court with Indian tacos.

  • July 27: Share Our Culture Summer Movie presentation, "More Than Frybread," 7-9 p.m. Free and open to the public.
  • Aug. 3: Beginning Finger Weaving Class, 1-3 p.m. Cost: $10 for members and non-members.  
  • Aug. 10: Free lecture about the roles women played within various indigenous North American cultures, noon-2 p.m. Presented by Choctaw Indian Jason Felihkatubbe. Felihkatubbe is a project director at Wichita State University and instructor at Butler Community College.
  • Aug. 14: Share Our Culture Summer Movie presentation, 7-9 p.m. Free and open to the public.     
  • Aug. 17: Beginning Dream Catcher Making Workshop, 1-3 p.m. Cost: $10 for members and non-members.  
  • Aug. 24: Beginning Shawl Making Class, 1-3 p.m. Cost: $10 for members and non-members.
     
Free Admission for Active Military 
The Indian Center has joined Blue Star Museums and is now offering free Museum admission through Labor Day (Sept. 2) to military personnel and their families.  

  

The free admission program is open to active-duty U.S. military personnel. Military identification is necessary; up to five family members may accompany each military member. 

The Indian Center's sister facility Old Cowtown Museum is also a Blue Star Museums member.

Ready to Stomp & Holler?  
Come out to Old Cowtown Museum at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 13 for Stomp & Holler, an outdoor concert that will get you jumping out of your lawn chair! This year's headliners are Honky Suckle and Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy. The concert is for all ages. There will be a cash bar.

Mike Blakely Concert July 19  

Award-winning singer/songwriter Mike Blakely is performing at Cowtown as part of its 2013 Empire House Live! concert/theater series. The performance will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 19 in Cowtown's Empire House Theater. Tickets are $15 in advance at WichitaTIX.com or $18 at the door. Tickets may also be purchased by calling (316) 219-4849.  


Nominated for 2013 Entertainer of the Year by the Texas Music Association, Blakely has toured all over the United States and Europe with his band. He records his original Americana/country/folk rock songs on his own independent record label. Blakely currently lives on his horse ranch near Marble Falls, Texas.
 
Blakely has recorded 11 albums, and his sound has been praised by MyTexasMusic.com as being "... truly Texan, harvesting the many cultural sounds and roots rhythms indigenous to the region.  Mike Blakely has put together a gem that sparkles like the lone star itself."

Age of the Gunfighter      

The always exciting Age of the Gunfighter event is returning to Cowtown on Saturday, Aug. 31. Mark your calendars now. 

Gunfights, historical character re-enactments and other Old West entertainment will take place all day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Watch our Facebook page for additional updates as we get closer to the event.

July 20-21: Composition, an interactive art and music event, 10 a.m.-4 p.m Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday

Artists, including musicians, performers, and other arts organizations will be exhibiting throughout the garden. July 20: WAM Summer Birthday Bash, 2-4 p.m.       

Help celebrate WAM's 78th birthday with ice cream, music, art-making activities, and more. For a third year, the museum throws open the doors to the community. Wichita Wagonmasters scoop gallons and gallons of the cold stuff while families stream through the galleries and art studio. Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum

On display through Aug. 11: "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow: Living with the Atomic Bomb, 1945-1965" 
The traveling exhibit explores the ways in which Americans experienced the Atomic threat as part of their daily lives -- at school, in the home and even at play. The show features more than 75 original objects from the era as well as large-scale graphics, radio broadcasts and film.
