Poster Contest Deadline June 28

The clock is ticking for the Wichita Flight Festival Poster Contest. Artists have until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 28 to submit original designs inspired by the theme "Air Capital of the World." A $1,000 award will be given to the winning artist, $500 to the second-place artist and $250 to the third. The Wichita Flight Festival will take place Sept. 28-29 at Jabara Airport. Air acts from around the country are scheduled to perform. All daytime activities are free and open to the public. The cost to attend the Saturday night Twilight Air show & Concert is $10. Tickets are on sale now at Wichita.TIX.com.

Get Hooked on Fused Glass 
Summer glass fusing classes are a hot topic at CityArts. Sessions are scheduled throughout June and July that lead students step-by-step through this centuries-old art form that involves bonding two or more pieces of glass together with heat from a kiln.

Creative Summer Fun for Kids     
Looking for creative activities for your children this summer? Online registration is going on now for CityArts' ArtCore programs that give youth ages 6 to 16 a core knowledge about art.

Each week has a different artistic theme and includes a field trip on the iconic River City Trolley to one of Wichita's landmark museums and attractions. Get details on all eight ArtCore programs on page 7 of CityArts' summer class brochure.

American Indian Festival   

The 3rd Annual American Indian Festival is a powerful event that connects visitors to Wichita's American Indian past and future. Join us July 13-14 at Century II Expo Hall to watch an unforgettable  Contest Powwow, shop in the Indian Fine Art Market and enjoy mouth-watering Indian tacos. Doors open at 10 a.m. both days.  

 

One new addition to this year's festival is a Film Contest. The first-place prize is $500. Pre-registration is going on now.    

 

A limited number of $30 tickets are available for the American Indian Festival Preview Party from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 12 in Expo Hall. Guests will receive a sneak peek at everything the festival has to offer before it opens to the general public. A catered meal is included. A table for 10 may be purchased for $250. All proceeds benefit the Indian Center. Call (316) 350-3340 to purchase Preview Party tickets.    

 

 

Bosin Exhibit Opens
"Tsate Kongia: Walking in Two Worlds, the Life of Blackbear Bosin" is now open in the Indian Center Museum. The exhibit includes rare and never-before-seen paintings, audio recordings and film footage. The show gives an in-depth look into the personal and professional life of Bosin, one of the founders of the Indian Center and the man behind Wichita's iconic Keeper of the Plains sculpture. Summer Youth Programs 

The Indian Center has many activities youth and their families can enjoy together this summer. Stop by anytime from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday to take self-guided tours of the Museum (self-guided tour prices are for groups of 10 or more only) or call ahead to schedule a personalized, themed program for your child or group.

  • June 1: Beaded Feather Earring Class, 1-3 p.m. Cost: $10 for non-members; free for members.    
  • June 8: Beaded First Strawberry Barrette Class, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost: $15.
  • June 15: "Music and Dance of the Southeastern Indians," free lecture by Choctaw Indian Jason Felihkatubbe, noon-2 p.m. Felihkatubbe is a project director at Wichita State University and instructor at Butler Community College.

Free Admission for Active Military
Old Cowtown Museum is joining more than 2,000 museums across the United States to offer free admission now through Labor Day (Sept. 2) to military personnel and their families through Blue Star Museums

The free admission program is open to active-duty U.S. military personnel. Military identification is necessary; up to five family members may accompany each military member.  

All summer long, Cowtown will offer military visitors the opportunity to take guided and self-guided tours of its 23 acres and 54 buildings, interact with interpreters dressed in period clothing and attend communitywide events and re-enactments that include "Frozen in Time" on June 15 and "Age of the Gunfighter" on Aug. 31.  
 

 

Watch History Repeat Itself     

Don't miss Old Cowtown Museum's "Frozen in Time" special event on Saturday, June 15. All activities will mirror events that took place in Wichita on June 15 in the 1870s. Does June 15 have any special meaning to you? Tell us why on our Facebook page.

June 6-8: Melodrama Theater, "The Bilking of Lord Bilgeworthy," 7 p.m. Presented by Doc MacDougal's Miraculous Melodramas. Advance tickets are $10 for youth ages 4-17 and $12 for adults. Tickets are $12 and $14 at the door.  

Dinner theater tickets available for Saturday's show. Cost is $22 for youth and $24 for adults. Reservations due by June 5. Dinner served at 6 p.m.

June 5: Hot Art for Cool Kids: 2D to 3D, 2 p.m.       

For families with children ages 6-12 or supervised groups, this fun workshop is a combination of self-directed gallery activities and an art-making activity in the art studio. Gallery activities begin at 2 p.m. and the session lasts about two hours. All activities are free, but a reservation is required. Spaces fill up quickly so call (316) 268-4929 to reserve your spot.
