Wichita Flight Festival Poster Contest  
Showcase your creativity by designing a commemorative poster for the 2013 Wichita Flight Festival that will be held Wichita Flight Festival logoSept. 28-29 at Jabara Airport. The deadline to submit entries is June 28.
 
The poster design selected as the winning entry will be printed and distributed as advertisement for this year's event. A $1,000 award will be given to the winning artist, $500 to the second-place artist and $250 to the third.

Creative Summer Fun for Kids     
Looking for creative activities for your children this summer? Online registration starts today for CityArts' ArtCore programs that are designed to give youth ages 6 to 16 a core knowledge about art.

June 3 kicks off eight straight weeks of ArtCore programs, each with a different artistic theme. Each week will also include a field trip on the iconic River City Trolley to one of Wichita's landmark museums and attractions.

Online registration starts today at WichitaTIX.com for all CityArts'  summer art classes that start the week of June 3. Classes are open to adults, teens and youth.   
 
Individuals who are looking for a comprehensive education in filmmaking, photography, design or multimedia should consider enrolling in one of CityArts' Digital Arts Studio Completion Programs.

Benefit Car Show May 5
The Mid-America All-Indian Center Benefit Car Show is free and open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5. Come see classic cars and motorcycles and speak with their owners.      

There will also be hands-on activities for the kids and Indian tacos for sale! As an added bonus, Indian Center Museum admission will be discounted to just $1 (savings of $6).

Film Contest Announced

The Indian Center is launching its first-ever American Indian Festival Film Contest with the Tallgrass Film Association as its media partner. The first-place winner will receive a $500 cash prize. Local American Indian filmmaker Rod Pocowatchit is heading the judging panel.

Filmmakers of all ages are invited to create eight- to 10-minute documentary-style films that capture the spirit and excitement of the American Indian Festival, which will be held July 13-14 at Century II Expo Hall. Filming must take place at the festival. Entries are due by Monday, July 22. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Museum Exhibits

"Walk a Mile in Our Moccasins" (now on
display). 
Celebrate the artistry of American Indian footwear with the Indian Center.
The exhibit includes more than 40 pairs of moccasins owned by American Indians from tribes throughout the Plains and Northwest. 

 

"Tsate Kongia: Walking in Two Worlds, the Life of Blackbear Bosin" (opening May 16). This exhibit features personal items from the Indian Center archives, never-before-seen photographs, vintage film and original paintings.

New Orientation Exhibit Opening 
   
A ribbon cutting for Old Cowtown Museum's new Orientation Exhibit will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. Mayor Carl Brewer and members of Historic Cowtown Inc. are scheduled to attend. 
 
The Orientation Exhibit is housed in what was previously known as the "Brown Barn," located near the entrance to Cowtown across from the Presbyterian Church. 
 
Over the past few months, the space, which was previously used for storage and closed to the public, has been completely transformed. Now, through museum-quality exhibits, visitors will receive a comprehensive overview of Cowtown's history and grounds at the beginning of their visit.

Steampunk Day Coming May 25   

The imaginary world of Steampunk is coming to Cowtown on Saturday, May 25. Activities for the entire family are scheduled from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Click here to learn more.

  

Steampunk is centered around a hypothetical past where steam-powered technology can create time machines and flying ships. And no Steampunk-inspired invention or clothing is complete without gears, goggles and gizmos.  

 

Steampunk Day is now in its fourth year at Cowtown. It not only attracts loyals fans of the Victorian science fiction-genre, but also those who are interested in learning more about it.
